Deacon Willie George Platt entered this world on May 12, 1932 to the late Worth, Sr. and Aquilla Platt in Lakeview, SC. He was united in the bonds of Holy Matrimony to Mother Geneva Nicholson Platt until the Lord saw fit to call her home glory. From this Union , God rewarded them with five children. He was also preceded in death by six of his siblings: Ester Mae, Hezekiah, Worth, Jr., Henry, Ernest and Ernestine. He later met, fell in love with, and married the former Lauretta Johnson Maroney September 23,1995. Sharing many things in common their love was quite obvious with the smile he put on his 'honey bunch' face. Often times seen in various worship services wearing matching colors. A man of integrity, character, style and charisma who had a heart for helping others, worked as one of the Triad's most reliable automobile mechanics often charging little to nothing just to help those in need. He was known to be able to fix anything. 'Deac' as he was affectionately called by the older members of Saint Mark and 'the candy man' by the younger generation, because of his love for providing the children with candy on Sunday's joined the Saint Mark United Holy Church in the early 1950's. He was a faithful and devoted member, appointed chairman of the Deacon board by the late Bishop W. B. Harbor and served effectively in that capacity for well over 50 years. Deacon Platt loved his church so much so that often times he stayed all day and night building and repairing things. The pulpit that stands today was built by Deacon Platt's hands. Brother Platt along with two of his close friends, Deacon Willie Wade and the Late Deacon Ernest Swann often went around town providing transportation to the elderly, bringing them to Saint Mark for something the church called the 'Old Folks Outing' . Deacon Platt along with the Late Mother Magdalene Johnson and the Late Bro. Joseph Long played an intricate part in forming the Tuesday noon day prayer meeting at the church where many lives have been saved and bodies healed. He leaves to cherish loving memories, his wife whom he affectionately called 'Lo' Lauretta Johnson Platt . Three sons: Superintendent Herman G. Platt(Regina), Ricky J. Platt(Paula), Timothy L. Platt(Greta). Two daughters: Gwendolyn D. Platt-Wilkes, Deborah J. Rideout, Four Step-Daughters: Denecia Maroney-Lee(Bruce), Pamela Maroney-Moore(Tony), Cynthia Maroney, and Juila Maroney-Swilley. Twelve grandchildren. Eight great-grandchildren. Seven step grandchildren . Five Step grand great children One sister: Mary Platt Dudley. Four sister-in-laws; two brother-in-laws, a close friend Deacon Willie Wade and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, church families and friends.A service honoring the life of Deacon Willie Wade will be held at Saint Mark United Holy Church on Friday May 26, 2017. The service will begin at 12:00 noon.
