Willie Irene Faulkner Matthews was born January 29, 1917 in Goose Creek Township Union County-Monroe, North Carolina to the late Henry Franklin Faulkner, Sr. and the late Rebecca Marshall Faulkner. She was the second of eleven children.Mrs. Matthews accepted Christ at the age of nine (9) and was strong in her faith in God and dedicated and committed to work in the church and community.She was known as a very caring and sharing person. She was an encourager. Her life exemplified the beautiful prayer of St. Francis of Assisi:Lord make me an instrument of thy peace,Where there is hatred, Let me so love;Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith;Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; And where there is sadness, joy.Divine Master; Grant that I may not so muchseek to be consoled, as to console;To be understood as to understand; To be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive;It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;It is in dying that we are born to eternal life.Mrs. Matthews leaves to cherish her memory children: Jean M. Boone Carter (Wendell) and Richard O. Matthews (Pam); two (2) grandchildren: Thomas A. Boone, Jr. and David Matthews; two (2) step grandchildren: Daman Carter and Nicole Carter Smith; and a host of great grandchildren; great-great grandchildren; nieces; cousins; and friends.
