Obituary

Mr. William Henry “Billy” Moore was born to Charlotte Moore and Moses Backman on April 13, 1944, in Charleston, South Carolina. His grandparents, Lula “Ida” and Julian “Bunny” Moore, raised Billy. As a little boy, Billy loved riding his bike and taking parts from old bikes to make new ones. As a young teenager, he loved to dress up, often borrowed his cousin Ulysses Moore’s clothes (without him knowing), and learned to drive early. He attributes his success today to his grandparents for the strong foundation they laid, instilling love, setting goals, and encouraging him to dream. Billy attended St. James Presbyterian Elementary School. In the mornings, he left early to start a fire so the school would be warm when other children arrived. Later, he attended WG Meggett High School in Charleston, South Carolina.

At 17, Billy went to New York, where he worked maintaining and stripping floors in several office buildings. In the late 1960s, he met Mary Deloise Shamberger, and together they made a life for their family. She has been his wife, partner, and friend in every endeavor. Together, Billy and Mary united their families and were blessed with five children: William Moore, Jr., Nicole Shamberger, Aaron Shamberger, Starlene Moore, and Keisha Moore.

In 1983, the family moved to Greensboro, North Carolina, where he worked for Pierce and Roft Homes and later Cone Construction. In January 1993, Billy worked with Gary Jobe Construction building dreams for families across North Carolina. Billy said he enjoyed working at Gary Jobe Construction because it was a family business and the employees were treated like family. The business was built on the same foundation that Billy’s grandparents instilled in him and continued to pass down to his family.

On July 18, 2010, Billy rededicated his life to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized, publicly affirming his faith in Him. Billy was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlotte Moore and Moses Backman; grandparents, Julian "Bunny" Moore and Lula "Ida" Moore; his brother, Larry Nathaniel Backman; and his grandson, Brandon Michael Shamberger Maynard.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife, Mary Shamberger Moore; his children, William Moore, Jr. (Rhonda) of Westampton, NJ, Nicole Shamberger of Greensboro, NC, Aaron Shamberger (Adacia) of Covington, GA, Starlene Moore of Laurel, MD, and Keisha Moore of Greensboro, NC; his twelve grandchildren, Adocia, Aaron, Jr., Jasmine, Nikayla, Briasia, Joshua, Shyquan, Desirae, Justin, Jeremiah, William III, and Elijah; his eight great-grandchildren, Makiyah, Nickoli, Kahliah, Adrian, Jewel, Alani, Avery, and Harmony; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and cherished friends.

He also leaves to cherish his memory his sisters: Ruth Yvonne Johnson, Janith Washington, Carol Jean (Clyde) Smalls, Arleen Backman, Karleen (Frank) Geddis, and Eunice (Johnny) Troutman; his brothers: Moses (Chloe) Backman, Bernard (the late Alice) Backman, and Nathaniel (Brenda) Backman; his sisters-in-law: Nedra Shamberger, Cindy Oliver, Patricia (James) White, and Demetra (Lenny) Oliver; his brothers-in-law: Joseph (the late Annie) Shamberger, Tony Shamberger, Jerome Murphy, William Shamberger, Brian Ennals, and the late Raymond Shamberger.
