Viola Scales Trent June 22, 1912-Sept. 20, 2014 Viola Scales Trent was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on June 22, 1912 to Mary Mosby Scales and William S. Scales. She died on September 20, 2014. She attended public school in Winston-Salem and graduated from Howard University in 1932. She lived much of her adult years in Washington, DC, Manhattan, and New Rochelle before returning to Greensboro in the 1970s. Viola was married for fifty-nine years to the late William J. Trent Jr. Together they had three daughters: Kay (Wendell M.) Holloway of Potomac, MD; Judy Scales-Trent of East Amherst, NY; and Toni (Barrington D.) Parker of Stamford, CT. An avid flower gardener, especially of African violets, Viola loved to play bridge, sew, and quilt. Viola was a member of St. Matthews Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the 'Ever-Young' Group, the Piedmont Triad African Violet Society, the 'Golden Rays' exercise group, the Women's Investment Group, the Shamrock Bridge Group, and the Saturday Evening Bridge Club. She had been a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority since 1929. Viola was also an advocate of the elderly and served on the board of Mobile Meals. She delivered food for twenty years and her yearly appeals in her church raised thousands of dollars for that organization. Whether serving meals, gardening, playing bridge, or simply being Grandma Vi, she will always be remembered for her quick wit, her generosity with friends, and her regal bearing. Viola is survived by her daughter, Judy Scales-Trent, two sons-in-law, and seven grandchildren: Brian D. Holloway, Karen Holloway Williams, Jonathan S. Holloway, Jason B. Ellis, Christine Trent Parker, Kathleen Trent Parker, and Jennifer Trent Parker. She is also survived by sixteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Two of her daughters, Kay Holloway and Toni Parker, predeceased her. The funeral will be held at St. Matthews United Methodist Church, 600 E. Florida Street, Greensboro on Wednesday. The AKA ceremony will be at 10:00a.m.; family viewing at 10:30a.m.; with the service at 11:00a.m.
