Velma Jean Hammond passed away on May 26, 2014 at the age of 74.  Velma Jean, â??Jean: as she was known to her friends and family, was born on August 14, 1939.  Jean was the second daughter of Clayton Baxter Hammond and Annie Le Cobb Hammond.  She graduated from James B. Dudley High School in 1957.  After graduation, Jean attended North Carolina A & T State University where she studied Physical Education. Jean spent most of her working years with Deluxe Check Printing.  Although Jean never married, she was an active participant in raising her nieces and nephews.  She helped them through college and graduate school. Jean was the primary caretaker for her ailing mother for many years.  Even with this tremendous calling, she found time for work, family, friends and travel.  Shortly after her motherâ??s death in 1992, Jean suffered a stroke.  Although her physical health was compromised by the stroke, Jean still lived a rich and fulfilling life surrounded by friends and family.  She attended the Adult Center for Enrichment where she participated in many activities. Jean spent many years with her loving family including several years with her youngest sister, Pamela Bailey and the last fourteen years with her eldest sister, Valeria Melvin. Jean was preceded in death by her father Clayton Baxter Hammond, her mother Annie Lee Hammond and her sister Rose Ophelia Tinnin.  She is survived by her sisters, Valeria H. Melvin and Pamela H. Bailey, her nieces Rita R. Dobson, Rosalind R. Stewart (Warren), Jacqueline Y. Bailey; and her nephews Stephen L. Adams and William E. Bailey III , all of Greensboro, North Carolina. Jean is lovingly remembered by her great nieces and nephews; Warren Stewart Jr., Brittany Bailey, Charles Dobson III, Chloe Bailey and Kolby Bailey; and a host of extended family members and friends.
