On Saturday, August 29, 2026, Thomas Penn Johnson, loving brother, uncle, cousin, and friend, passed away at the age of eighty-three in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Tommy attended James B. Dudley High School, graduating in 1961. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia College in 1966 and his Master of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1968. In 1982, he received a Master of Arts degree from Wake Forest University.

He was a published author, a poet, scholar, and educator. He spent twenty-six years teaching English before retiring in 2009 from Edison State College in Fort Myers, Florida. He recently returned to live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Mrs. Madriene Penn Harris and Mr. Jesse Thomas Johnson Sr. He leaves to cherish his memory his sister, Marsha Thomas, brother, Jesse Johnson Jr., several nieces, nephews and faithful cousins.
