Obituary

Steve Watkins Martin, Jr., son of Steve Watkins Martin, Sr. and the late Barbara Brenda Bruce, was born on August 20, 1967 in Plainfield, New Jersey. Steve, affectionately known as "Stevie," departed this life on Monday morning, August 17, 2015. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ransom Julius and Syble Estelle Watkins Martin and his maternal grandparents, Sam Martin Bruce (one of the original Tuskegee Airmen) and his wife Grace Foy Bruce. Raised in Greensboro, North Carolina, Steve graduated from James B. Dudley High School, Class of 1986. Afterwards, he served in the United States Army. On March 13, 2005, he was united in holy matrimony to Shannon Renee Smith. From this union, they were blessed with a son, Steve "Trey" Watkins Martin, III. Steve was a devout Christian and served in several ministries prior to joining World Changers Church International, where he served as a Vision Keeper. He coached his son's basketball and football teams and was an avid supporter of his nephews' football endeavors. His passion for children inspired him to utilize his God-given gift to establish Inner Wealth Residential, a facility for adolescent males. Over the course of 8 years, Steve mentored, inspired and supported numerous adolescent males in an effort to prepare them for the challenges of life. A motorcycle enthusiast, Steve has been riding motorcycles and 4-wheelers most of his life. As a 9 year veteran of the Carolina Kings Motorcycle Club, he was head of public relations and an elder in the club. In the biker community, he was known as "Sinbad." Steve's memory will be cherished by his devoted and loving wife, Shannon Smith Martin; his son, Steve "Trey" Martin, III; daughter, Devyn Smith; father, Steve Martin Sr. (Sharon); sister, Tiffany Martin Staten (Bobby); brother, Christopher Martin; uncles Garland Martin (Barbara) and Kenneth Martin (Deborah); 2 special cousins, Kenneth "Chi" Martin, Jr. (Toni) and Stephanie Martin Peters (Jason). Steve also had an especially close relationship with his mother-in-law, Juanita Smith; sisters-in-law, Michele Smith-Robertson (Reginald) and Ebony Smith-Graves (Sheon); brother-in-law and fellow Carolina Kings brother, Josiah "Roc" Smith; honorary grandmother, Shirley Davis and a host of family and friends. Steve never met a stranger, was loved by all who knew him and will never be forgotten. He is now riding the heavenly highways on a Harley – his dream bike. A funeral service honoring the life of Steve will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church,1301 Alamance Church Rd, Greensboro, NC 27406 on Friday August 21, 2015 at 1:00 pm. The visitation will begin prior to the service at 12:30 pm.
