Obituary

Shirley Hall Johnson transitioned after a lengthy illness on March 13, 2017. She was born in Winston-Salem on August 11, 1950. She attended the public schools of Forsyth County and graduated in the class of 1969 from Anderson High School. After graduation she attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and became the first minority graduate of its school of Physical Therapy. While attending UNC she met and married her husband of 44 years Kenneth M. Johnson. There were three children born of this marriage. As a licensed physical therapist she spent her entire career at Cerebral Palsy and Orthopedic School and Gateway Education Center. Shirley was a tireless champion for the mentally and physically disabled children whose lives she touched every day. Shirley was preceded in death by her father George Frank Martin and mother Elizabeth Ann Hall. She is survived by her husband Kenneth M. Johnson, children, Micah, Kya and Ryen J. Perry (Wilbert) one grandchild, Roman Perry and her sister Portia H. McDougal. She is further survived by three sisters in law, Allene Johnson, Marva Brown and Doris Murrell, two brothers in law James Murrrell and Calvin McDougal and a host of nieces, nephews and innumerable friends. The family is eternally grateful to her caregivers Christine Talbert and family who cared for her as a sister and mother throughout her lengthy illness. Services will take place on Friday, March, 17, 2017 at East White Oak Missionary Baptist Church, located at 1815 Water Street, Greensboro, NC 27405. Family visitation begins at 1:30pm, with services beginning at 2:30pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers to please make donations in Shirley's name to NC A&T State University "Alzhiemer's Project". Final Arrangments have been entrusted to Perry J. Brown Funeral Home.
