Dr. Howard Allen Chubbs, PastorSherman Norman Shelton (90) departed this life on September 5, 2011 at the Carriage House. He was born to the late George and Mary Warren Shelton on February 16, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in a large loving family being the oldest of eight children. Strong Christian teaching and values guided him to be baptized at an early age at Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church.Sherman was educated in the public schools of Philadelphia, graduating from Germantown High School. He received his bachelor degree in Animal Husbandry from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia. Following graduation Sherman served in World War II in Central Europe Campaign and received medals for Army occupation (Japan), Good Conduct Medal Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon (Okinawa), European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon. â??S.N.â?? as he was professionally known worked with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service during which time he served as a County Agriculture Agent in Jones, Richmond and Orange Counties. He earned a Master of Adult Education Degree from North Carolina State University in Raleigh. His last position in Extension was a District Program Leader for Agriculture. He retired from North Carolina State University after 34 years. Following retirement, he served as an adjunct instructor at North Carolina A&T State University and as an Agricultural Chemical Representative for BASF Corporation serving North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. During his active and professional years, Sherman was a member of Epsilon Sigma Phi Extension Honor Society and Gamma Sigma Delta Agricultural Honor Society. He held several positions in Gamma Beta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Connecting Link Sherman Shelton of The Links, Incorporated was a member of the Princess Anne, Maryland Chapter. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church on Tuscaloosa Street where in his active years he attended Sunday School and sang in the Male Choir.He is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years Dr. Gladys Gibson Shelton; two daughters Lillie Nichole (Nikki) Shelton Bradshaw (Keifer) of Greensboro and Natalie Anona Shelton of Atlanta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his son Sherman N. Shelton, Jr. (mother Mildred Davidson Shelton) and Granddaughter, Imani Shelton Green. Grandchildren: Segun Shelton Green of Chapel Hill, Leah Bradshaw and Rachel Bradshaw of Greensboro, Bridgett, Brittney and Shawn Simpson of Charlotte. His surviving siblings are brother Warren Shelton and sisters Rae Alyce Tan, and Bettie Anne Atterbury (Welton) all of Philadelphia, PA.; brothers-in-laws, John A Gibson, Jr (Dureatta) Nashville, NC; and Charles R. Gibson (Lori) of LaPlata, Md. He was very close with his godchildren, Navy Captain Kristen Atterbury, Guantanamo Bay, of Cuba, Corey Eugene McMillan of Houston Texas, Kia Sarika Powers of Greensboro, NC, and Allie Delois Richardson, of Stone Mountain, Georgia; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends will miss him.
