Obituary

Mr. Rufus Earl Stanley was born May 31, 1945 to the late Henry B. Stanley and Winnie Catherine Miller Stanley in Duplin County, NC. Rufus was the last of ten children and was affectionately known among his family as "Pee-Wee". Rufus graduated from EE Smith High School in Kenansville, NC. He served in the US Army where he was stationed in New York and Germany. He received a Bachelor's Degree from North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. Rufus retired from Guilford County Health Department as a Public Health Investigator after 34 years of service. He accepted Christ at an early age at Salem Chapel Freewill Baptist Church in Pink Hill, NC. He settled in Greensboro, where he met his wife and raised two daughters. While in Greensboro, he became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served on the Transportation Ministry, Stewards Ministry, and was an Enabling Team Leader. Rufus was a 32nd Degree Mason with King Soloman. He was a charter member and 1st Worshipful Master of Carolinian Lodge 100. He enjoyed volunteering at Hayes Taylor YMCA for more than 30 years as Campaign Worker for sustaining members to the Board of Directors. He had a passion for barbequing, fish frying, gardening, and sports. You knew you were liked by Rufus if he picked on you, offered 'his' food, or gave you long lectures or in his words some good advice. Proceeding Rufus in death are: Father, Mother, and Step-mother: Annie Lee Greene Stanley; 3 brothers: Calvin Stanley, Robert Stanley, and Robert Greene; 1 sister: Ruby Mae Stanley. Rufus leaves to cherish and celebrate his memories: wife of 38 years, Faye; two daughters: Nichole Renee Stanley, Wytheville, Virginia and Pamela Stanley-Blackwell (Bryan); two granddaughters: Ryann Kennedi Stanley-Blackwell and Skylar Gabrielle Blackwell. Siblings: Henry Stanley (Mae) Newburgh, NY; James Stanley (Swannie)Pink Hill, NC; Richard Stanley (Sadie) Newburgh, NY; William D. Stanley (Rachel) Charlotte, NC; and Virginia Drake, Bronx, NY. Eight sister-in laws and eight brother-in-laws whom he considered younger siblings and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends with delightful memories. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 24, 2014, at 11:00am at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1301 Alamance Church Rd. Greensboro, NC. There will be a wake on Thursday, October 23, 2014, at Brown Funeral Home, 6:30pm – 8:00pm
