Mr. Robert L. Waddell, Sr., 91 departed for Heaven to his eternal rest on February 6, 2018 after a brief illness. Robert was born on October 4, 1926, in Randolph County, to the late Walter Lee (Jack) & Ophelia Foust Waddell. Robert joined First Congregational Church, now Emmanuel United Church of Christ, as a young adult, where he served as an usher. He attended James B. Dudley High School class of 1945, and was a member of the marching band, he played the alto saxophone. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy, as a submarine sailor, he later enlisted in the United States Army where he had many duties, transportation, cook, and the General's Aide. He served in World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War, during his time in the Army his family joined him in Heidelberg, Germany which was a treasured experience for them all. Robert loved playing pinochle and attending family gatherings where he and his brother Charles would discuss their options, he also enjoyed discussing the days of old and sitting outside on the carport of his home watching every car and truck that passed. Robert was a good husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather, uncle, and cousin. He was preceded in death by his son Randy Walter Waddell and his brother Charles Walter Waddell. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 71 years Ruth, children Cynthia and Bobby, grandchildren Nikki(Dennie), Heather, Joi(Kim), Jessie (Akon), Eric, and Randy, 11 great grands and 3 great great grands, sister in law Alice (Date) Waddell, a niece Sandra Sellars, a nephew Larry Waddell, whom were like siblings, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins.A service honoring his life will be held at Emanuel United Church of Christ 2909 Phillips Avenue, Greensboro, NC on Sunday, February 11, 2018. The visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. and the service will follow at 1:30 p.m. The interment will take place following the service at Guilford Memorial Park; 5900 West Gate City Boulevard, Greensboro, NC.
