Obituary

Robert Allen Nelson passed away and went home to be with The Lord on January 28, 2016 at Wesley Long Hospital. He was 87 years old. He was a beloved son, husband, father, and grandfather. He was born in Warren County, North Carolina, March 24, 1928. He was the youngest child and son of Johnnie and Jodie Nelson also of Warren County whom are deceased. When he turned 18 years old, he joined the Army Air Force and served his country faithfully.  He eventually married Ruth Foster and moved to Hackensack, New Jersey then to the Bronx, New York where their two sons were born, and eventually moved to Hempstead, Long Island New York. He became employed with the U.S. Postal Service as a Mail Carrier in New York, but after several years of living there, the family moved to Greensboro, NC where he continued working as a Mail Carrier for many years and retired. In 1970 he joined and became a member of Trinity AME Zion Church of Greensboro, where he gave his life to The Lord Jesus Christ. He joined the Sanctuary Choir and the Male Choir and served faithfully. He also served as a Steward at Trinity AME Zion Church and a faithful member of the James Varick Club. He was also a Shriner, at the Khalif Temple #144 as well.  Later he joined and became a member of The Glen Burleigh Choir. He leaves behind his loving wife Ruth Foster Nelson who is 85 years old of Greensboro NC; two sons: Bryan Nelson of Greensboro and Arnold Nelson of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren: Brooks, Bryan, Carlton, Brittney, Morgan Nelson, Noah and Deboris. He had four sisters: Bessie Nelson, Mattie Harrison, Rowena Williams and Thelma Burwell; three brothers: James, Norman and Clifton Nelson whom are all deceased.  Also, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Robert Nelson served his family faithfully and was a faithful active member of his church up until he was 87 years old. He will be greatly missed by all, but now he has gone home to Glory. A service honoring the life of Mr. Nelson will take place on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at Trinity AME Zion Church, 631 Florida Street, Greensboro, North Carolina, 27406. The visitation will begin at 12:30 pm and the service will follow at 1:00 pm. The interment will be held at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 North O Henry Boulevard, Greensboro, North Carolina, 27405.
