Obituary

Robert Davis was the third child of Walter Davis and Mary Rodgers Davis. He spent his early years in Warrenton, NC surrounded by his eleven brothers and sisters. He graduated from John R. Hawkins High School in Warrenton, NC and, shortly thereafter, followed his older brother, Willie, to Greensboro, North Carolina in search of a better future. Upon moving to Greensboro, NC, he enrolled in North Carolina A&T State University and worked at the Greensboro Country Club. While attending the university, he was introduced to his future wife of 62 years, Maxine Dargan. After a one year courtship, they were married on November 9, 1957. With his first child on the way in 1961, he knew he needed better employment to support his growing family, so he responded to an advertisement in the newspaper seeking young black men to apply to the Fire Department for the City of Greensboro. Out of 300 applicants, he was one of the 28 young black men that filled this historic 1961 class of Greensboro City firefighters. These young black men worked together in the segregated Station #4 during the Civil Rights Movement until 1967, when the fire department became desegregated. He continued to serve his community as a Greensboro firefighter until he retired in 1992. Early in his life, he accepted Christ as his Savior at Little Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Warrenton, N.C. As a young married man, he joined his young bride's home church of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church where he remained a faithful member for over 60 years, until his death. As a dutiful member of Trinity, he worked tirelessly as a servant of God through his work in the community and for his beloved Trinity. He served as President of the James Varick Club for many years and was instrumental in establishing a scholarship fund which was later named after him in honor of his service. He also served on the Trustee Board for the church and was responsible for the church bus and its schedule of activities. He loved gardening and always kept a well-manicured lawn. He also loved working with his hands which was evident in his painting company, Robert L. Davis Paint Contractor. One of his proudest accomplishments was painting the interior and exterior of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church. Robert was a man of God and patriarch of his family that gave unselfishly of himself and, in return, he was loved and adored by his family and friends. He is predeceased in death by his brothers Willie Davis, Walter Davis, Romeo Davis, Roger Davis, and two sisters, Betty Cooper and Patsy Davis. Left to cherish precious memories of Robert include his wife and best friend Maxine D. Davis, daughters - Robin D. Whitaker and husband, Mike W. Whitaker of Raleigh N.C. and Toi D. Wilson and husband, George E. Wilson of Marietta, Georgia along with his loving nephew, Charles Lindsay and wife Cheryl A. Lindsay. During his retirement he assumed his most cherished title as "Papa Davis" to his four beloved grandchildren: Michael Whitaker II and Michelle Whitaker of Greensboro N.C. and Davis Wilson and Lindsey Wilson of Marietta, Georgia. In 2019 he was blessed to welcome into the world his only great-grandchild, Little Miss Joelle Reeves of Greensboro, N.C. He also leaves his five loving sisters to mourn his passing: Doris Fields, Panthea Robinson, Matilda Livingston, Brenda Brown, Celestine Debnam, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends. A private graveside service will be held on Monday, June 15, 2020 at Lakeview Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you give donations to Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church Building Fund.
