Richard Allen
Chavis
April 9, 1953 – March 14, 2026
Richard “Rick” Allen Chavis, 72, of Greensboro, North Carolina, departed this earth on March 14, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy of quiet strength, a steady spirit, and a family who loved him dearly.
Born in Durham, North Carolina, on April 9, 1953, Rick was the son of the late William Melvin Chavis Sr. and Mary Eunice Tyner. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, whose values he carried with him throughout his life.
Rick’s professional life was defined by his love of the open road. For approximately 40 years, he served as a professional truck driver. He retired with an extraordinary record: 3.5 million miles driven without a single accident. To those who knew Rick, this milestone was a point of quiet pride—reflecting a man of focus and reliability who could always be counted on to navigate the long haul, whether on the highway or in life.
Retirement didn’t slow Rick down; he brought that same work ethic to Red House Furniture in High Point, where he worked part-time. He took great pride in his work there, quickly becoming a fixture in the workplace and making many dear friends among his colleagues and customers alike.
Above all, Rick was known for his love of Classic Automobiles. He had a deep appreciation for the craftsmanship and history of vintage cars, a passion that was a defining part of his life. When he wasn't admiring a classic engine, he found joy in Western movies and the music that served as the soundtrack to his many journeys—especially Old Motown hits and Country music.
Rick was also an exceptional cook who truly excelled at the grill and the smoker. He was famous for his fried fish and for smoking the best ham you’d ever have. He was so happy when he was preparing a meal for those he loved, sharing his talent and skill.
Left to cherish his memory is his devoted and loving wife, Annette Chavis; a son, Xavier Carlos Johnson of Greensboro; and a daughter, Erica Baker of Greensboro. He was a proud grandfather to two granddaughters.
Rick is also survived by his sister, Sheila Haith of Greensboro; his brother, William Melvin Chavis Jr. and wife Ann of Jacksonville, Florida; and his brother, James Anthony Chavis of Greensboro. His memory will be further honored by a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends who respected the man he was.
Rick’s heart was anchored to his family and friends. He was a man of simple comforts who took pride in a job well done and the love of those he returned home to after every journey.St. Paul Baptist Church
