Obituary

Raymond H. Mitchener was born in Smithfield, N.C., July 7, 1932. He joined Galilee Baptist Church at an early age, where he was very active. He was a member of the Golden Rod Sunday School class, the Youth Choir, and served as an usher. He held leadership positions including Youth Choir Program Chairman and Assistant Superintendent of the Sunday School.

After graduating from High School, Raymond was drafted into the Army's prestigious U.S. Signal Corps, and was stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany. After spending two years in the Signal Corps, Raymond attended NC A&T State University, graduating in 1959.

Raymond was employed by the U.S. Postal Service where he worked for 30 years. While there, he served as a Supervisor and Priority Mail Consultant. He was also a member of the Postal Alliance Club and after retirement, the Postal Retiree's Club.

Raymond enjoyed new challenges, and as a second career, earned his N.C. Real Estate license and his Real Estate Appraiser's certification. He belonged to the Greensboro Real Estate Association, the North Carolina Real Estate Association, and the National Association of Appraisers.

Raymond and his family were members of Providence Baptist Church. He was a member of the Men's Fellowship, the Spiritual Choir, and the Outreach Visitation Committee.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Glenna (Bowes) Mitchener, two daughters, Stephanie Randle (Darryn), Sharon Metz (Gregory), two grandchildren, Lauren Metz and Devin Randle; brother Clifton Mitchener (Frances), and numerous nieces and nephews.

Raymond was preceded in death by his father, John W. Mitchener, mother, Gussie Mayo Mitchener; four brothers, Napoleon Mitchener, Wiley Mitchener, Everett Mitchener, Wilbert Mitchener, seven sisters, Irene Moore, Louise Bell, Josephine Chappelle, Mildred Phillips, Willena Campbell, Mamie Mitchener, and Helen Glover.

A service honoring his life will be held on Friday, March 18, 2022 at 1 pm at Providence Baptist Church. 1109 Tuscaloosa St. Greensboro, NC 27401.
