Obituary

Prince Earl Smith departed this life for his heaven-bound home on January 8, 2017. He was born at Worthington's Crossroads in Winterville, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Prince and Magnolia Smith. He was preceded in death by his brother Raymond P. Smith and sisters Minnie B. Tyson and Maggie Louise Johnson. Prince received his early education from the Pitt County Schools. Furthering his education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, he earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture education, and a master's degree in administration with a certification in principalship and supervision. He began his career as a teacher in adult education with the Pitt County Schools. He was later called to serve in the United States Army. After serving in the Army for two years, he returned loyal to his profession as an agriculture teacher with the Guilford County Schools, at Sedalia High School and Northeast Senior High School. He later worked at the Central Office as the Director of Federal Programs for Guilford County Schools and held that position until retirement. He was a member of numerous organizations. He previously served as a member of the Guilford County Planning and Development Board and was vice chairman of Guilford County Board of Adjustment. He was a member of the Guilford County Farm Services Agency of North Carolina Agriculture and Forestry Commission, Young Men's Christian Association, A&T Aggie Club and the Gate City Chapter of Alumni Association of A&T State University, Sedalia Civic organization, Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, UNC, and chairman of the Whitsett precinct. During his early childhood, he was a member of the Episcopal church in Greenville, North Carolina. He later joined the United Church of Christ in Sedalia and served as chairman of the Trustee Board and treasurer for many years. In recent years, he returned to his Episcopalian roots and became a member of the Church of the Redeemer. He served on several boards and was senior warden for several years. He continued to work in the church until his health declined. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ruth E. Smith; daughters: Priscilla B. Smith of Raleigh, North Carolina and Felicia Smith Parks and husband Tony of Sedalia, North Carolina; sister-in-law Ruby E. Nottage of Fort Washington, Maryland; a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends will miss him. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m., Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 901 East Friendly Avenue, Greensboro, NC 27401. Viewing is scheduled at 10:30 a.m. at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Prince E. Smith and Ruth E.
