Obituary

Mr. Pershing Edward Wall, Sr., loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather departed this life on Monday, July 2, 2018 at the age of ninety-nine. He was born on January 2, 1919 in Albemarle, NC to James Marshall and Eliza Jane Wall. Pershing, the seventh of ten children, was educated in the Stanly County school system where he graduated from Kingville High School in May 1935. In the fall of 1935, he began his college career at the then, A&T College. He enrolled as a day student working waiting tables and keeping the furnace at a boarding house for food and lodging. After completing two years of study, he returned to Albemarle during the summer of 1937 and began working as a salesman for Kitchen Kraft Aluminum Company. On June 19, 1941, Pershing married his soulmate, Mildred Gillis who preceded him in death. From this union, four children were born. Pershing entered the U.S. Army in 1943 serving as a tank mechanic during World War II. He received an honorable discharge in 1945. In 1946, he was employed with the Railway Mail Service which was headquartered in Washington D.C. He made frequent trips to Charlotte, N.C. and Hinton, W.V. After traveling for a year, he transferred to the Greensboro terminal as a postal employee. During this time, he re-entered and completed all requirements for the baccalaureate degree in Sociology with Honors from A&T College in 1951 where he was inducted as a member of the Sigma Rho Sigma Honor Society. He remained with the postal agency until his retirement as Safety Officer in December of 1980. Shortly after relocating to Greensboro, Pershing transferred his membership from Union Chapel AME Zion church to Trinity AME Zion Church. His service to the church included: Sunday school teacher, Class Leader, Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent of the Church School, Chairman of the Board of Stewards, Past President of the Lay Council, Delegate to the General Conference and serval annual conferences. He has served on the NC State PTA Board from 1972 – 1990. Also, he was a retired lifetime Vice-President and is one of a few individuals who holds this position. He served on the first elected Greensboro City School Board of Education for two terms (1980 – 1990); and he was a member of the NC State School Board Association. Pershing was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Gillis Wall, his daughter, Cathey M. Wall, his parents, as well as his sister and brothers. He leaves memories to be cherished by his three surviving children: Pershing E. Wall, Jr. (Jo-Ann), Thomasville, NC, Pamela Glover (Lloyd), Atlanta, GA, and Michael Wall (Angela), High Point, NC; five grandchildren: John White (Meisha), Atlanta, GA, Hope Jackson (Michael), Greensboro, NC, Monique Holley (David), Port Republic, MD, Alexander Wall, Greenville, SC, and Michale Wall, High Point, NC; four great-grandchildren: Morgan, Lelah, William and Ian; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Funeral services will be at Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church on Sunday July 8th, 2018 at 2pm. Family visitation will precede at 1:30pm. The interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery.
