Mother Nora "Patten" Martis was born on February 6, 1933, in Warrenton, North Carolina, and peacefully transitioned on March 15, 2026. A woman of strength, grace, and unwavering love, she lived a life that touched countless hearts and left a lasting legacy.
At an early age, Nora moved to Newark, New Jersey, where she was educated in the Newark School System and graduated from South Side High School in 1952. She was also a devoted member of Metropolitan Baptist Church in Newark, NJ, where she attended faithfully with her parents and began building the foundation of her faith.
In 2004, Nora returned to North Carolina, where she later joined Cedar Grove Tabernacle of Praise in Greensboro, NC. There, she continued her walk of faith and remained a loving and active presence within her church family.
Nora was known as a strong and resilient woman, yet beneath her strength was a warm and nurturing spirit. She had a deep love for people, especially children. Throughout her life, she cared for neighborhood children as if they were her own—feeding them, guiding them, and always making sure they felt seen and loved. No matter where she lived, she poured positivity into her community and created meaningful connections that lasted a lifetime.
A true servant to others, Nora dedicated much of her life to helping those in need. She worked various jobs over the years and even started her own home aide service, providing care and support to many in her community—often in ways that went unseen but were deeply impactful. Despite her many responsibilities, she successfully raised a large and loving family while still finding time to enjoy life.
Nora found joy in simple pleasures such as fishing, bowling, and horse racing. She carried a light that filled every room with laughter, warmth, and positivity. Her presence was powerful— an aura of love, encouragement, and resilience that inspired everyone around her to keep going, no matter the circumstances.
There are truly not enough words to fully capture the greatness of Nora Martis. Her strength, courage, and endurance through life's challenges were remarkable. Blessed are those who had the opportunity to know her, to feel her love, and to experience the joy she brought into the world.
She was preceded in life by her parents, Neil "Poppa" Minter and Annie Blanche Minter.
Nora was the proud mother of twelve children. She was preceded in death by six of her children: LaVonya Hagan, Otis Hagan, Alvin Hagan, Alton Hagan, Linda Martis, and Alexander Martis.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory six children: Larry (Arthal) Minter, Atrancia "Tracey" Hagan, Leola Hagan, Nicholas "Shaboo" Martis, Pauline Martis, and Tiyana Cureton; along with a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Her legacy will continue to live on through the love she gave, the lessons she taught, and the lives she touched. May we all carry a piece of her strength, her kindness, and her unwavering spirit in our daily lives

Closing Tribute My loves, don't hold your heads too low for me, I've only gone where my soul is free. Carry me gently, not in sorrow or despair, But in every laugh, every moment we shared. I loved you deeply, I loved you loud, In quiet strength and moments proud. Through every hug, every word I gave,
Was a piece of the love I wanted you to save. So walk in love, and walk in truth, Hold onto joy, hold onto proof That every life, when filled with care, Leaves something beautiful everywhere. And when you think of me, don't cry too long, Just smile a little, and carry on strong. Because my legacy lives in all you do, In every kind and loving part of you.
