Obituary

On June 6, 2021, at 12:49 am, Almighty God dispatched an Angel of Mercy to 308 Grand Oaks Drive, Gibsonville, North Carolina, with a clear message for Nadine Steward Brown. "It's time to come Home, My Good and Faithful Servant."

Nadine was born to Willie and Cora Steward, on June 13, 1937, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She grew up, attended school there and kicked up her heels as a majorette. Upon graduation from Second Ward High School, she relocated to Greensboro, North Carolina to attend A&T State University. There, she met William B. Brown Jr. They fell in love, married and had 3 children: LaDonna, Bill and Andre. As a mother and wife, Nadine was very attentive. She devoted most of her energy to working and caring for her family. She was a stern disciplinarian, and her children were noted for having "good manners." She made sure they said, "Please, and thank you, yes sir, yes ma'am." Nadine also enforced strict rules when shopping in stores with the children, always saying, "Don't touch anything."

Nadine and William, whom she called "Honey Bun," worked hard to create a structured family full of love, hope and possibilities. Nadine did her best to instill a sense of right and wrong in her children and taught them to love and honor the Lord. Nadine was very active in the church and spent over 50 years as an Usher at various churches.

Despite the challenges of being a wife and mother, Nadine worked outside of the home. In 1968, she accepted a position at AMP Incorporated in Greensboro (now known as Tyco). There, she displayed the same Commitment to Excellence that marked her life as a wife and mother. Nadine was employed there for 25 years before retiring in 1993. In addition to rearing 3 children, and maintaining a full-time job outside of the home, Nadine spent years as a caregiver for both of her parents and both of William's parents. Each of the parents lived with Nadine and William until being called Home by the Lord.

After retiring in 1993, Nadine found new ways to embrace life and develop additional avenues for personal growth.

Her "sense of style" was accentuated as she increased her jewelry collection and her signature collection of glamorous hats. Nadine also catered to her love of travel, taking several cruises with William and friends, as well as a trip to Europe.

Nadine also developed an interest in porcelain dolls. She took classes, and became highly skilled in doll sculpture. Her exceptional collection of porcelain dolls remain in place to this day.

In an effort to expand her social network, Nadine joined The Red Hat Society, an organization dedicated to the empowerment of women. During her retirement, Nadine became proactive in her community, serving on the Sedalia Planning Board. As Nadine is remembered, her legendary Culinary Skills must be acknowledged. Her Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinners were world class, both in taste and presentation. In colloquial terms, Nadine "put her foot in it" whenever she cooked a meal.

Nadine was an amazing woman, with an abundance of love and care. She will truly be missed.

Nadine is survived by her 3 children, LaDonna Solomon (Steve), William Brown (Johnetta), André Brown; her loving sister- niece, Earleen McKnight (John); cousin, Vernell Isabel (George); brother in-law, Ray Brown; 5 grandchildren, Darell Brown, William Brown, Morgan Montgomery, Philip Montgomery, Senora Surgeon; 7 great grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." John 14:27

A service honoring her life will be held at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church 408 Martin Luther King Jr Dr, Greensboro, NC 27406 On Thursday, June 10, 2021. The visitation will begin at 11:30am and the service will follow at 12:00pm. Burial Lakeview Memorial Park.
