Obituary

Myrtle Lucile Alston Weekes was born February 18, 1922 in Greensboro, North Carolina to Ernest and Charlotte Taylor Alston (both deceased). She passed in her home on Friday June 19, 2020. She was raised in the East White Oak Community. She attended the Greensboro Public Schools and received her BA from Bennett College. A teacher of special needs children for 45 years was one of the most enjoyable duties of her life. A very faithful and longtime member of Providence Baptist Church for 80 years, she was a Sunday School Teacher for 40 years and a Vacation Bible School Teacher. She sang in the Sanctuary Choir, was chairperson of the Decorating Committee, Girl Scout Leader, member of the Community Service Guild, Philathea Circle, and Christian Fellowship. She was also known for her bulletin boards and beautiful table settings for the church. Her life was filled with service and charitable activities. The organizations and affiliations were: Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, member and treasurer of the National Council of Negro Woman, (Greensboro Section), Retired Teachers Association and Begonia Garden Club. Mrs. Myrtle had a devout love for The Creator, family, friends and life. She was known for her smile, generosity, and caring nature. She was consistently heard saying "God is good". She was an avid gardener of vegetables and flowers, a skill she passed on to her Beloved daughter and fulltime caregiver until her passing Adrienne. She was preceded in the death by her parents Ernest and Charlotte Alston, husband Rupert D. Weekes, Jr., daughter, Felicia Gail Jones; and nine siblings. She leaves to cherish and celebrate her loving memories and legacy, daughter, Dr. Adrienne A. Sabir son, Rupert D. Weekes III of Greensboro, NC. Grandchildren Kalimah Ali, Shahidah Sabir, Raqib Basir, Bilal Sabir, Sirajuddin Abdul Qadir, and Sharif Basir, 18 great-grandchildren, 4 great, great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Dottie Alston, a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, long time close friends, Sarah Greenlee, Annye Wright, Doretha Henderson, and many others who loved her. A private graveside service honoring her life will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2020 at Lakeview Memorial Park.
