Michael Petteway of Thomasville, North Carolina passed away peacefully January 4, 2020, at the age of 76. Michael was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. Full of life long experience, he could always be counted on for a captivating story that would leave you enamored and laughing with him, inside his dry and amiable sense of humor. He was a true testament to a life well lived and well loved. Michael was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on August 2, 1943. He was the son of the late Augustus and Zoady Holt Petteway. He graduated from Georgetown High School in Jacksonville, North Carolina and attended A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. He had a long career in transportation and logistics, providing great resource for reliable road and travel advice. His tips and tricks for safely and efficiently arriving to a destination are still re-called upon by friends and family in their daily travels. Michael was a meticulous sort, finding satisfaction in carefully maintaining anything he felt committed to, whether that be his suits, his home, his family or his bike. An avid motorcycle enthusiast, Michael was instrumental in forming the Golden Suns Motorcycle Club, serving as President of the Greensboro Chapter for more than two decades. More recently, he became a proud member of the Greensboro Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club. Michael's generous and thoughtful nature compelled his interests for participating in their philanthropic pursuits, giving him ample opportunities to support his community while enjoying the fellowship of his friends from behind the windshield of his beautiful Honda Goldwing. Additionally, Michael was a faithful member of Invincible Lodge 251 PHA, serving as tiler. He was also a charter member of Faith Consistory #3 New and Progressive Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite for the 33rd Degree of Freemasonry Southern Jurisdiction, Prince Hall Affiliated where he served as sentinel. Michael joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church finding even more ways to serve his family and community through is faith and love for all those around him. Michael was in love with his family. His commitment to their care and well-being was unconditional and steadfast. Michael was preceded in death by his daughter, Michele Denise Petteway. He is survived by his wife, Melva Ollie Petteway of the home; his two sons, Michael DeVonn Petteway, and wife Carrie, of Apex, North Carolina; and Marc Darin Petteway and his wife Atiya, of Greensboro, North Carolina. Michael is also survived by his biggest fan, and one of his greatest joys, his granddaughter, Kaylen James Petteway, of Apex, North Carolina. As Michael's most recent time was spent with Kaylen at home, the very strong bond and special connection that was able to flourish between them was delightful and will always be cherished. He was preceded in death by three brothers and is survived by three siblings, Hughes Petteway, and his wife Sallie, of Jacksonville, North Carolina; Althea Reid, and her husband Thomas, of Prospect, Connecticut; and Zoanne Petteway of Gardenia, California. Michael also leaves behind an adopted daughter, along with countless nieces, nephews and cousins. Michael will be missed beyond measure by all those who have been fortunate enough to know and love him for all of his blessings that were placed upon this earth, August 2, 1943. The family would like to extend their immense gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff of Transitions Life Care of Raleigh. They are a kind and amazing group that worked closely with the family to ensure that Michael's final days were met with comfort, peace and reverence. A mighty oak has fallen, a profound silence follows. Funeral Services will be held at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Greensboro, North Carolina at 12:00 noon, Friday, January 17, 2020. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Greensboro. The family will receive friends at Mt. Zion Baptist Church following interment. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Transitions Life Care, Hospice of Wake County at 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.
