Maurice L. Davis, 83, husband of Ruth Johnson Davis of Greensboro passed away Sunday, July 21, 2019 at Beacon Place Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro following a brief illness. Born January 12, 1936 in Birmingham, Alabama, he was the 3rd child of the late Foster and Annie (Knox) Davis. Mr. Davis spent his early years growing up in Birmingham Alabama. He was educated in the Jefferson Co. School system and a graduate of Wenonah High School. He served two years in the U.S. Army as a photojournalist. Upon completion of his military career, he moved to Chicago, Ill. where he and his younger brother Melvin launched MarMel Studio, specializing in portrait photography, weddings and special events. The business ran successfully for 10 years. He has worked for several prestigious studios in both Illinois and North Carolina to include Alderman Studios, in High Point, NC as a commercial photographer. Mr. Davis earned the distinguished title as a, Master Photographer, and was a proud member of The Professional Photographers of America and the South Eastern Professional Photographers Association. His work has been featured in numerous magazine advertisements, catalogs, and specialty publications around the county. Mr. Davis dedicated his life and his talent to the Lord as a baptized member of the East Market Street Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church in Greensboro, NC where he became a deacon and remained an active member until his transition. Under the leadership of Dr. Lawrence Hamilton, Mr. Davis' love for photography and his desire to spread the word of God inspired him to create the East Market Street SDA Television Ministry. This ministry aired weekly and served as spiritual outreach for the community. Mr. Davis hosted a monthly dinner at Urban Ministries, which fed more than 50 homeless people. This resulted in his creation of the foundation for the Adventist Men Community Service Organization. He continued to serve the community with his talent by capturing precious memories of weddings, birthdays, family portraits and other events that touched the hearts of many. Maurice Davis loved the Lord and was devoted to his family. He was especially fond of his grandsons. There was never a moment that he did not have his camera. Family memories were always documented through out the years; he visually shared his life story and that of many others through eye of his camera lens. He continued to be devoted to the causes dear to his heart and was responsible for making his mark and increasing the visibility of Seventh-Day Adventist in the community using media that is still making a difference today. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruth Johnson Davis; Daughters: Yolande' Harrison, (Chris), April Davis and Michelle Cook (Departed); Siblings: Dorothy Lyles (Joseph-Departed), James Davis (Departed) and Melvin Davis, (Eulalia); Grandchildren: Austin Cook, Blake Wilson, Avery Harrison and Carrington Harrison; God Daughters: Melody Reeder, Channing Callands and Peggy Roey and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends. A service honoring his life will be held on Sunday July 28, 2019 at East Market Street Seventh-Day Adventist Church; 1804 E. Market St. Greensboro, NC. Visitation will begin at 2:30pm with service following at 3pm.
