Mattie Ruth Alston Crump was born June 7, 1933, the second oldest of five children of the late James Porter Alston and Stella Horton Alston in Gulf, North Carolina. On February 26, 2020 she departed from this life peacefully at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina. Mattie, as she was called by family and friends, graduated from Goldston Colored High School. She received her early nursing education from Freedman's School of Nursing in Washington, D. C. Mattie began her career in nursing at L. Richardson Hospital where she worked until it closed. After the closing of L. Richardson she continued to work in her field at Britt haven Nursing Home and Clapp Nursing Home in Pleasant Garden, N.C. She retired from Clapp Nursing Home at age 80. Mattie met and married the love of her life Ernest Lee Crump. They opened their home, heart and kitchen to any and everyone. She was known for her cooking especially her chocolate cakes and sweet potatoes' pies. Mattie was preceded in death by her parents, Porter and Stella Alston, brothers, Lendo Alston, Monroe Alston and Odell Alston and sister in law Delores Alston. She leaves to morn, one son Karl Alston, Raleigh, N.C., Sister, Earline A. Brooks (Willie), Daughter, Rashchaunda McDonald (Nekia),Granddaughters, Hannah Leach, Isabella McDonald, Sister- in- Laws, Doris Alston, Goldston, N.C., Maude Alston, Sanford N.C., and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. A service honoring her life will be held on Monday, March 2, 2020 at the Cassie Coote-Brown Memorial Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home; 909 E. Market St. Greensboro, NC. Visitation will begin at 10:30am with service following at 11am. Internment will be at Macedonia AME Zion Church Cemetery; 1225 Gulf Rd. Gulf, NC.
