Obituary

Mrs. Matties Ingram Amaker of Greensboro, NC was born in Wadesboro, NC to the late Harvey Ingram, Sr. and the late Ellen F. Ingram. She was married to Sandford Amaker and to this blessed union two children were born: Sandra (Ingram) Braswell and Beverly (Ingram) Melvin. Mattie resided in Greensboro, NC where she was a pillar of strength to her family and community.

Mattie was preceded in her passing by three brothers, Bradley Ingram, Clarence Ingram, and Lonnie Ingram, and one sister, Fannie Wall.

Mattie attended Greensboro public schools and graduated from Dudley High School in 1952. She held employment at Griffin Bakery and Cone Mills until retirement.

She loved the lord, her family, people, and life. Mattie was a faithful and dedicated member of Mt. Olivet A.M.E Zion Church for over 70 years. During her active years she served on the Deaconess Board. Often Mattie shared stories of walking to the initial Mt. Olivet location on Beach St. with her parents and siblings. Because Mattie loved and embraced everyone she met Mt. Olivet bestowed her with the honor of 'Mother of the Year'.

Her love and zest for life was carried out by traveling abroad and domestically with her husband, daughters, and their families. Mattie and her husband relished in visiting her sisters who were stationed with their military husbands. Throughout the years, she orchestrated family coming together on the 4th of July where she insisted each family dress alike, loved having spontaneous fish fries and cookouts for family and friends, and encouraged a yearly fun trip with her siblings. Mattie always took time to celebrate family achievements and life events regardless of the location.

Surviving relatives to celebrate Mattie Ingram Amaker's remarkable life, legacy, and to cherish their dear memories are: her beloved husband, Sandford Amaker; her loving daughters, Sandra Braswell (late Mitch Braswell), Beverly Melvin (Pierre Melvin); her precious granddaughter Maya Melvin; her brothers Harvey Ingram, Jr. (late Phyllis Ingram), and Carl Ingram (Gwen Ingram); her sister Connie Harrison (Walter Harrison); brother-in-law James Wall and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The service honoring her life will be held Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Mt. Olivet A.M.E Zion Church; 2123 McConnell Rd. Greensboro, NC. Service will begin at 2:30pm.
