Obituary

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Graham Hopkins began her new life on Wednesday, December 15, 2021. She was born to the late David and Annie Laura Graham in Prosperity, South Carolina on November 12, 1934.

Mary matriculated through the Guilford County (NC) School System and graduated from James B. Dudley High School in 1952. She earned her bachelor's degree in 1956 from Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. Thereafter, she began her greater than 30-year career in education.

On July 2, 1960, Mary married the late Ronald Bernard Hopkins, and to this union was born one child, Rhonda Tomora. Mary was a lifelong member of Trinity AME Zion Church in Greensboro, NC where she served as a Missionary and servant of God. Mary was a stickler for education and had a passion for special education where she taught students with disabilities for greater than 20 years. She was a charter member of the Guilford County (NC) Chapter of Top Ladies of Distinction where she served as the chapter financial secretary and Top Teens Advisor. Along with her leadership and service in the community, she was a member of the Greensboro (NC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

She leaves, to cherish her memory and legacy, her daughter, Rhonda Hopkins Hunt (I.C.); grandchildren Dorian Hunt (Kelsie), and Kandiss Hunt, Bennett C. David (Krissie), and Briana N. Hunt; great-grandchildren, Isaiah Gibbs, Noah C. Burton, and Harper B. David. Brothers, David Graham, Jr., the late Roy E. Graham; Sisters, Ruth G. Halsey, Lauretta G. Havner (Roosevelt), Mildred G. Williams (Lory), Joanne G. Stokes (Wilbert), a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, a very special caregiver, Laketicha Chillous, and a very special friend, John H. Harris.

Mary will live lovingly in our hearts and memories forever. She was a mother, mentor, and friend to many.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday December 22, 2021 in the Cassie Coote-Brown Memorial Chapel at Perry J. Brown Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 12:30pm Burial will follow at Guilford Memorial Park, 6000 West Gate City Blvd, Greensboro, NC 27407.
