Marie Darr Scott peacefully transitioned from elder to ancestor on Tuesday, April 4, 2017, at her home in Greensboro. Marie was born on September 11, 1948, in Washington, DC to Frances LeCompte and adopted by Mabel and Clyde Darr Sr. of Thomasville, NC, who raised her as their own. She was preceded in death by Mabel, Clyde Sr., and their children Bessie Mae, Clyde Jr., George Odell, and Herbert Richard. Marie graduated valedictorian from Church Street School in Thomasville in 1966 and went on to UNC Greensboro, where she became active in the Black Liberation Movement. She graduated from UNCG with a History degree in 1970. As a labor movement activist, she then went to work at the Cone Mills White Oak Plant for 18 years organizing the union from within. During her time as an activist, Marie wed Robert Philip Myrick Smith. From this union her children were born: Karl William Clyde and Casselle Alyce Elisabeth. Robert passed in May 1992. In the years that followed, Marie met, fell in love with, and married the sunshine of her life, Sam Willis Scott. Together they owned and operated Scott Tree Service for over a decade. Her beloved husband preceded her in death on June 11, 2016. Marie leaves her children Casselle (Everette) McKoy of Raleigh and Karl (Lara) Smith of Greensboro, and her stepchildren Sylvia Scott Spencer of Chesapeake, VA, Holly Green (Charles) Porter of Charleston, SC, Kenya (Bessi) Vick of Hackensack, NJ, Shawn (Yolanda) Vick of Staten Island, NY, Chanique Carney-Dixon of Harlem, NY, and Christina Marche' Robinson of Raleigh. She is also survived by her sisters Peggy Jean (Charles) Beaty of Cleveland, OH, and Annie Ruth Darr of High Point. Marie was a graceful warrior who brightened rooms with the radiance of her smile, changed hearts with the power of her positivity, and inspired us all with the strength of her spirit. The family will receive friends for the wake on Friday, April 14th, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 15th. Both will be held at Perry J. Brown Funeral Home.
