Obituary

Margaret Louise Carr departed this earthly realm on Tuesday afternoon, September 26, 2023, at Moses Cone Hospital. Margaret, the younger of two children, was born on July 10, 1923 to the late Lee Carr and Estelle Cowan Carr in Mt. Ulla (Rowan County), North Carolina. Margaret's early education took place in the Rowan County public schools, Second Ward High School, Barber Scotia College, Johnson C. Smith University and North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University in Greensboro, NC.

Immediately after graduating from Johnson C. Smith University, Margaret's first teaching job was in Mooresville, NC where she taught for ten years. She then completed her 30-years teaching career at F.D. Bluford Elementary School in Greensboro.

At an early age, Margaret had the opportunity to receive a good religious foundation at Oakland Presbyterian Church in Rowan County. She attended Sunday School regularly and enjoyed taking advantage of the training available during Vacation Bible School.

When she moved to Greensboro in 1948, she joined St. James Presbyterian Church under the leadership of Rev. J. T. Douglass. Her dedication to the church in her adult years was obvious as she served diligently as an Elder, a Trustee and a Deacon. Margaret was active in the women's ministry as a member of Marie Florance Presbytettes Circle and the Presbyterian Women. She regularly attended the mid-week Prayer Service and Sunday school.

When St. James participated in a bowling league, she was not only a member of the Presbyterian Rollers Bowling Team, but she was also the secretary/ treasurer for seventeen years. She also served on the Ministry of Compassion Committee. Margaret remained a faithful and dedicated member of St. James as long as she was able.

Margaret's community involvement included the Guilford County Retired School Personnel, Johnson C. Smith and Barber Scotia Alumni Organizations, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She volunteered for numerous years with the Cancer Society's "Road to Recovery" transporting patients and she also delivered meals for the "Meals on Wheels" Program.

Margaret, lovingly referred to as "Aunt Louise", didn't have any children of her own. However, she was family matriarch and mother figure to Stephen (nephew) and Regina (niece) during their formative years as well as continuing that nurturing love for their children and grandchildren. Margaret is survived by her nephew, Stephen McClendon (Deborah), her niece, Regina Wolfe (Brian), grandniece, Jennifer Bejin (Valbrun), grandnephew, Jonathan McClendon, grandnephew, Ryan Wolfe, great grandnephew Deandre Mercer, great grandniece Marissa Mercer, great Goddaughter, Lisa Tucker Grier, a host of cousins and close family friends.
