Obituary

Mrs. Mannie Belle Lomax Scott, daughter of the late Cyrus Lomax and Bannie Sturdivant Lomax, was born April 20, 1935 in Wadesboro, North Carolina. She was the third of four children. She departed this life May 12, 2017 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, North Carolina following a lengthy illness. After moving to Greensboro, she matriculated through Greensboro City Schools and was a proud graduate of Dudley High School where she sat on the Crown and Scepter Club and was a member of the Honorary Society. Mannie graduated from North Carolina A&T State University with a Bachelor of Science in English Education with a minor in Art. She also received Master's degrees in both English and Art from North Carolina A&T State University. At NCA&T she proudly served as a Majorette and was intimately involved in campus life. Mannie went on to begin a 30+ year career as a High School English and Art teacher in numerous school districts throughout the region. Mannie also acted as an Adult English Professor at Guilford Technical Community College for many years. She ended her professional career as a teacher in Guilford County Schools. As a teacher she was actively engaged in the National Education Association as well as the North Carolina Association of Educators, National Council of Teachers of English, and North Carolina English Teachers Association. Mannie loved art and was an accomplished artist, proudly adorning her house and loved ones with her creations. Many of her students throughout the years won scholastic arts awards. She proudly added many of these award winning pieces to display in her home. Mannie married and to this union, two children were born, Ronny Douglas Scott, Esq. and Dr. Allison Katrina Scott-Akridge. These children and God served as her nucleus, providing her with unyielding love and joy. Mannie joined Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church as a child and dedicated her life to serving God and her Church. She was a lifelong member of Trinity. As a youth she served in the Youth Choir and Youth Group. She later served on the Victorian Richardson Missionary Society, Life Members' Council, Cecil Bishop Club and served as member and Secretary of class #41. Mannie was a loving and patient wife and mother, and a kind friend and neighbor. Mannie was actively engaged civically and socially conscious, helping to integrate many institutions during the era of civil rights in our country. She was generous and loving, providing emotional and financial assistance to family members and friends in need. She loved to laugh and make others laugh. She loved her dog Max; he never failed to put a smile on her face. These were the joys in her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, and three sisters, Mrs. Nellie Parks, Ms. Marjorie Lomax, and Mrs. Virginia Henderson. She leaves to mourn her loss, her son, Ronny Douglas Scott of Washington, DC and her daughter, Allison Katrina Scott-Akridge (Carl Akridge) of Greensboro. Her nieces Ms. Stephanie Henderson, Mrs. Bannie Hatch, and Ms. Bonnie Lomax, nephew Bryle Henderson Hatch, special cousins Ms. Gloria Wray and Harold Walls, and a host of family, friends and colleagues she lovingly celebrated throughout her life. They all will miss her generous spirit, humor, and unconditional love.
