Mamie (Aunt Mamie) L. Turner went home to be the Lord on Monday, March 9, 2020. Mamie was born on August 31, 1922, the fifth child of nine to Walker and Maggie Ledbetter. She was preceded in death by her parents, 8 siblings, her nephew/son Michael Revel, and devoted niece Barbara L. Herring . Mamie accepted Jesus Christ at an early age at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church in Winston Salem, NC. In 1940 she graduated from Atkins High School in Winston Salem, NC and went on to further her education at Livingston College in Salisbury, NC, where in 1944 she earned a degree in Education. Mamie earned two master degrees from New York University and Columbia University in New York City, NY. She joined the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. while at Livingston College and remained a faithful and financial Lifetime member until her death. She was a generous donor for many years to her Alma Mater Livingston College. Mamie Turner retired from the Guilford County Public School System after many years of teaching Science and Math. In 1948 Mamie married the love of her life, Orlester Turner. They remained united until his death in 1986. Mamie became a member of Trinity AME Zion Church in Greensboro, NC, where she held many positions and remained a faithful member until her death. Mamie loved to travel and visited several Caribbean Islands with her sister Elizabeth Ford, now deceased. She also traveled to many other foreign countries. Mamie was an avid bowler and a regular mile walker. She won many, many trophies. Mamie loved to play pinochle and played regularly with her friends until her death. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association and regularly met members for lunch. Mamie loved her family. She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted great niece Leslie Ross (Dennis), a devoted son/nephew Bernard Revel (Brenda), her faithful caretaker Shirly Gilmore, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
A service honoring her life will be held at Trinity AME Zion Church; 631 Florida Street, Greensboro, North Carolina, 27406 on Friday, March 13, 2020. The visitation will begin at 11:00 am and the service will follow at 12:00 pm. The internment will take place following the service at Carolina Biblical Gardens; 5710 Riverdale Dr, Jamestown, NC 27282.
