Obituary

Lucille Palmer Scandrett was born on October 22, 1922 on a farm near Warrenton, North Carolina. Her mother went to be with the Lord at an early age. Lucille and her brothers, Mack, Napoleon, and sister, Ella were raised by her grandparents. She was also an active church and choir member in Jordan Hill Baptist Church where her grandfather was an elder. She grew up on the farm where they raised corn, chickens, tobacco, and cotton. After graduating from high school, she moved to New York City where she met her husband, Alfonso Scandrett of Atlanta, Georgia. They raised their two children in Harlem, attending Convent Avenue Baptist Church where all were members. Together they owned and operated a thriving candy store business in Harlem on 135th Street and 8th Avenue selling everything from newspapers, cigars, and candied apples, to Lucille's famous spicy hot pickles. In the late 1970's, they sold the business and retired to Greensboro. Lucille enjoyed working in her flower garden, as well as canning and preserving vegetables. She attended St. James Baptist Church where she was a member until recent years when her failing health prevented her from being in active attendance. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband in 2003. She is survived by 2 children: Alfonso Scandrett Jr. (Cynthia) and Christeen Scandrett, all of Greensboro; and one grandson: Alfonso Scandrett III of Kingman, Arizona. She will be remembered and loved by her family and true friends and never forgotten. Her wishes to have her final days at home were honored and she passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 14. Thank you to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ for giving us the strength to fulfill her wish. A service honoring the life of Mrs. Scandrett will be held on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at St. James Baptist Church, 536 West Florida Street, Greensboro, North Carolina, 27406. The visitation will begin at 11:30 am and the service will follow at 12:00 pm. The interment will take place at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 N Ohenry Boulevard, Greensboro, North Carolina 27405.
