Louis Henry Mathews was born in Liberty, North Carolina on February 1, 1933. He passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at his residence. Buster, as he was fondly called, graduated from Liberty High School class of 1950. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, from which he retired. While in the military, he received numerous medals and honors. Following his military service, he worked for the United States Postal Service from which he also retired. Busterâ??s community and civic services included Armed Forces Retirees Club, former Meals On Wheels volunteer, former member of Providence Baptist Church usher board, and lunch buddy with Guilford County public school system. Buster was an avid baseball fan, a pinochle player, generally loved people, never met a stranger, and a big prankster. He was very charitable and supported numerous causes and organizations. Buster was preceded in death by his parents: Louie Matthews and Julie Castle Matthews; step mother: Hazel Matthews; wife: Joan Miller Mathews; ex-wives: Mary Hemby Mathews (children) Norman and Deena Mathews and Jacqueline Muff Mathews; Siblings: Jawrawna Washington, Dayneise Coble and Theodore Castle. Buster leaves to cherish his memory: daughters: Wanda Mathews Bethea (Lawrence), Gregory Joel Mathews, Ashley Nicole Mathews; stepson: Dr. Joseph Martin (Bertha); brother: Walter Castle; five grandchildren: Mychael, Lauren, Jasmine, Jordan, and Kayin; great grandchild: Malakhi; and a plethora of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
