He grew up in Snow Hill, North Carolina with his grandmother Helen C. Artis. She raised him with his brother Anthony and first cousins Rochelle and Angela. He spent his summers and school breaks in Brooklyn with his parents and younger brothers Haakim, Kiindu, and Shaka. Kwame graduated from Green Central High School in Snow Hill, North Carolina - Class of 1990. He then attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, home of the Aggies, where he pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated and met his wife Nicole McNeil.Kwame made his home in Greensboro, North Carolina where he worked at Tyco, Ralph Lauren Polo, and FedEx. Kwame held many, many titles. He was a hard worker and entrepreneur always looking for the next opportunity. Kaleb Elijah Artis, his son, was Kwame's pride and joy. They did everything together from sharing Twizzlers , watching movies, to eating their breakfast of champions-Captain Crunch. Kwame called Kaleb his "mini me". Kwame had a zest for life where his philosophy was "Live, Love, Life". To know Kwame was to know how it felt to laugh until you cried. His sense of fashion was legendary and he was always impeccably dressed from head to toe. Preceding him in death are his father: Omar Matthews, his grand- mother: Beatrice Sylvester, and his grandfather: William Henry Artis. Leaving to cherish his memory are wife: Nicole; son: Kaleb; mother: Mary Matthews; grandmother: Helen C. Artis; six (6) brothers: Anthony Artis, Haakim Matthews, Jamal Bedward, Hasson Bedward, Kiindu Matthews, and Shaka Matthews; sister: Nassirah Matthews, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, fraternity brothers,1091 Foxcroft brothers, and many, many friends.
