Katherine Louise Dillard was born on June 26, 1938 in Bristol Virginia/Tennessee to Stanhope and Flora Lacy. Katherine's family moved to Knoxville, TN, Milwaukee, WI and the South Bronx before eventually settling in St. Albans Queens, New York. Katherine grew up with a love of music, art, math and science. Katherine attended Hunter College in Manhattan where she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Soon after college, Katherine met the man she would remain with for the next 53 years, Anthony L Dillard who she married on August 8th 1964. Katherine Dillard remained in New York City for another decade working at several hospitals as a lab technician while taking graduate courses at St Johns University in Queens. Also during that time Katherine's family increased with birth of their son Graham in 1967 and daughter Charlene 4 years later in 1971. A job transfer and longing for a less hectic way of life brought the Dillards to Greensboro, North Carolina where the family became members of St. Matthews United Methodist Church in 1975. Over the years Katherine became active in many Church Ministries including Superintendent of Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Tutoring, Methodist Youth Group Counselor, United Methodist Women and Communion Stewards among others. In addition, Katherine found time to complete her Master in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Katherine Dillard taught 7th and 8th grade Science in both area private and Greensboro Public Schools retiring in 2008. Among her numerous honors, Katherine was twice awarded Guilford County Public School's 'Teacher of the Year'. Katherine Dillard was preceded in death by her younger sister Cordelia Lacy, Father, Attorney Stanhope Lacy Jr. and Mother Flora Lacy. Katherine leaves behind her husband: Anthony L Dillard; daughter: Charlene Dillard; son: Graham Dillard; grandson: Nicholas Dillard; daughter-in-law: Esther Dillard; sister-in-law: Annette Coward; and a host of cousins, extended family, friends and former students. Katherine Dillard left us peacefully on the early morning of Thursday, May 10th 2018. A service honoring her life will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at St. Matthews United Methodist Church; 600 E. Florida St, Greensboro, NC. The visitation will begin at 11:00 am and the service will follow at 12 noon. The interment will take place following service at Lakeview Memorial Park; 3600 O'Henry Blvd, Greensboro, NC.
