Jonah Smith Sr. passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday October 6, 2015 following a lengthy illness. Jonah was born in Smithfield, N.C the youngest of six children, to the late Ben and Vera Smith. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean War. Jonah was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and graduated from N.C. A&T State University Summa Cum Laude in 1957. He retired from NC A&T State University as the Budget Director after serving over 30 years. Jonah was a Trustee Board Member of Trinity A.M.E. Zion Church as well as the Church Treasurer and a member of The James Varick Club. Jonah leaves to cherish his memory; a devoted wife of 56 years, Alstyne F. Smith; three sons: Jonah Smith Jr. of Greensboro N.C, Gregory A. Smith (Debbie) of Dover, DE., and Andre' L. Smith of Greensboro, N.C ; and seven grandchildren. A Celebration of Jonah's Life will be on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at Trinity A.M.E Zion Church located at 631 East Florida Street. Visitation will be 10:30am and the service will follow at 11:00am.Interment will be at Guilford Memorial Park.Professional services entrusted to Perry J. Brown Funeral Home.
