Obituary

John Sartin formally of 915 S. English Street was a resident at Maple Grove Health & Rehab Center entered into time April 5, 1931 to the late Tom and Anna Duke Sartin in Greensboro, N.C. He made his exit from this life on February 5, 2013 at Maple Grove Health and Rehab Center. He was preceded in death by his wife Evelyn Willis Meekins Sartin, and son, Tyrone Willis.John attended James B. Dudley High School and later enlisted in the United State Army in 1956 and served in the Korean War. He lived to witness many historical events such as the civil rights movement to the election of the first African American President. John retired from the Housekeeping Department at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 1998. He was a cook for the Central YMCA, S&W Cafeteria and the City Club downtown Greensboro. He was a member of United Institutional Baptist Church for over fifty (50) years Ward #189. He served faithfully in the kitchen until his health declined. He had a passion for cooking and was a sports fan.John leaves to cherish his loving memories: son, Vance (Lenora) Yancey; granddaughter: Kimberly Yancey; great granddaughter: Makayla Taylor, and sister: Daisy Mae Harrington all of Greensboro, N.C.; sister-in-law: Dr. Madeline Scales of Winston-Salem, N.C; nieces: Anna McPhatter of Raeford, N.C.; Melanie Harrington, Pamela (Otis) Robinson, Mary Ruth McGowan, Patricia (John) Leake, and Brenda Brown all of Greensboro, N.C.; nephews: William Sartin, Sr. of Randleman, N.C.; James Haygood, Jr, Roy Sartin, and Rufus McGowan, Jr. all of Greensboro, N.C.; cousins: Rev. Eva Ratliff, and Rev. Kenneth Lilly, Sr. both of Greensboro, N.C., and Geraldine (Hollis) Payne of Haw River, N.C.; special friends: Ada Motley, Virginia Bynum, Rev. Robert Tate, and Durham Auto Center staff all of Greensboro, N.C.; a host of other relatives and friends.
