Obituary

John Estee Parker affectionately known as John, Tee, Estee, Grandpa, Papa, or just Mr. Parker, by family and friends, peacefully entered eternal life on November 23, 2018. He was born in Wilson County, North Carolina on March 26, 1929, to the late Johnny and Cora Melton Parker and raised to adulthood by Doretha Evans Parker, his stepmother. John graduated from Frederick Douglas High School, Elm City, NC. After high school, he joined the United States Army for four and a half years, where he served in the Korean War as a medical technician and continued his education in Japan during his three-year tour of duty. He earned the rank of Sergeant in the Army Medical Corp and was honorably discharged in 1953. His decorations during his time of service were: Korean Service Medal, Japan Occupation Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. Upon leaving the military he attended American University in Washington, DC, where he also served 26 years in the Federal Government, working for the Government Printing Office, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Department of Labor and, served as a Committee Chair and President of AFL-CIO Local Union 29. John and Evelyn A. Fletcher were joined in Holy Matrimony on November 7, 1964 and they recently celebrated their 54th Wedding Anniversary. To this union, they built a beautiful family together. He was blessed with two sons, five grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. During the course of their marriage, John invited family and friends to their home and enjoyed traveling to visit relatives. The family moved to Greensboro, NC in 1975 and became a resident of the Woodlea Acres community. He became an active member of the Woodlea Association, serving as Coordinator of Block Captains. As a Block Captain himself, he advocated for community activities. In fact, some residents referred to him as "Mayor of Woodlea". John became a member of St. James Baptist Church in 1975, and during his long membership, he served on the Finance Committee, Board of Trustees, and was the Treasurer of St. James Daycare Center. Additionally, he provided any administrative support needed for the Harris/Mintz Dance Group, one of the church's youth programs. John embraced his greater purpose as the community father to the local children. He changed their lives with his wisdom and his secret ingredient called 'love'. In his past-time, he loved North Carolina A&T football and basketball, and he was a season ticket-holder. He enjoyed his favorite soap opera 'The Young and the Restless' and doing crossword puzzles. John loved to cook because eating was his passion. Most people eat to live -- John lived to eat. He was proceeded in death by his only sister Nora Cox and three brothers: Andrew, James, and Elmer. He leaves to mourn him, one brother, Joseph C. Evans, San Antonio, TX. His beloved wife of 54 years Evelyn, his sons Darryl and Keith, grandsons D'Andre, D'Andrew, "Drew", Darrian, and Keith Jeffrey - "Myles", granddaughter Nichole, and great-grandson, Jayden; former daughters-in-law, Stephanie and Regina Parker, a special daughter Tasha Colbert, a devoted family friend Dr. Delores Parker, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A service honoring his life will be held on Saturday December 1, 2018 at Saint James Baptist Church; 536 Florida Street, Greensboro, NC. The Visitation begins at 9am and the Service begins at 11am. The interment will take place following the service at Lakeview Memorial Park; 3600 North O'Henry Boulevard, Greensboro, NC.
