Dr. John Jacob Chapman, 69, of Greensboro, NC, passed away Friday, June 30, 2017 at his residence. John was born in Lenoir County, NC to the late Dr. Mark and Beloney (Baker) Chapman. After completing Jones Senior High School, he graduated from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He received a master of science degree in organic chemistry from North Carolina Central University in 1977 and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Wake Forest University in 2000. While working as a research chemist from Lorillard, John authored two patents. Upon retiring, he shaped minds as a professor at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Shaw University and Apex School of Theology. He was also an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling. He is survived by one son, Jonathan S. Chapman (Angela) of Chicago, IL, two daughters, LaShaunda L. Croussore (Kevin) of Milpitas, CA, and Bionca D. Huntley (Daaron) of Greensboro, NC, and four grandchildren, Julian, Jonah, Audrey and Parker. He is also survived by five brothers, Dr. Mark Chapman Jr. (Mildred) of Jacksonville, FL, Norris C. Chapman (Rosa) of Linden, NJ, Bishop Dr. James P. Chapman (Glenda) of Kinston, NC, Joseph N. Chapman (Denise) of Clarksville, TN and Isaac E. Chapman of Kinston, NC, and five sisters, Mary E. Wiggins (Booker T.) of Kinston, NC, Sarah E. Barrett (Sam) of Hillside, NJ, Martha J. Cobb of Kinston, NC, Dorcas C. Green (Milton) of Kinston, NC, and R. Deborah Williams (Curtis) of Portsmouth, VA. John was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Chapman, parents Dr. Mark and Beloney Chapman, and siblings Philip Chapman and Rachel Simmons. Visitation and memorial will be held on Saturday, July 8 at 1:30 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church, 1106 Tuscaloosa Street, Greensboro, NC 27406. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Engineers.
