Obituary

Joe Bill Smith Jr., (Scoot) departed this life peacefully Friday, July 10, 2020, in Greensboro, North Carolina at Cone Hospital. He was born February 8, 1947, to the late Joe Bill Smith Sr. & the late Mary Elizabeth Smith in Greensboro, North Carolina. Joe Bill was a member of the Dudley Senior High School graduating class of 1965. During his senior year, he was selected to participate in a Industrial Co-Op Program between James B. Dudley Senior High School and Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC). The program allowed students to earn their High School Diploma, while at the same time, earning an associate degree. He received his Associate Degree in Drafting and accepted his first job out of High School at Bell Laboratories. Later in life, he accepted a mechanical engineering position with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Washington DC. His Engineering career was broad in scope and includes many highlights. Joe Bill was a very good athlete. He played baseball throughout his early adulthood. He participated on many championship teams. He ended his career playing baseball for the Greensboro Knights, a semi-professional team. Joe Bill's passion was playing and teaching golf. He participated in several golf fundraisers and charity golf events in Greensboro and the surrounding areas. He obtained a PGA Teachers Certification and taught lessons in Maryland, Washington DC, Virginia, and North Carolina. Joe Bill was preceded in death by his father, Joe Bill Smith Sr., mother, Mary Elizabeth Smith, maternal grandparents, Mr. Luther and Mrs. Pauline Morton, brother, Wayne Smith, brother, Anthony (Rag) Smith, aunts, Doris (Dot) Jackson and Delores (DeDe) Worthy. Joe Bill was a proud and determined man with sincere family values. Joe Bill leaves behind many friends and family to cherish his memory. He is survived by his wife Theresa E. Smith, two daughters, Michelle Smith and Kym Smith, step-mother, Linda Kay Smith, two brothers, Luther Smith (Bowonna) and Chad Smith (Lashanda), one sister, Dana Robinson (Rishado), three grandchildren, Eric Smith, Emare Smith, and Morgan Smith along with three great-grandchildren, Amaya Elizabeth-Ann Smith, Eric Dwayne Smith Jr., Zyir Michael Smith, nephew, Lyle Smith (Jaqueline), niece, Ivie Smith-Moore, great-nieces, Bailey Moore and Kennedy Smith, first cousins, Alton Scales (Saundra), James Scales, Lavern (Vern) Cox, Lanita (Kitten) Thomas (Ralph) and a host of other relatives and friends. A private chapel service honoring his life will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at the Cassie Coote-Brown Memorial Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home.
