Obituary

Mr. Jerry M. Shoffner, Sr. passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at Cone Health Moses Cone Hospital.

A viewing for the public will be held Saturday, March 4, 2023 from 1-4 pm in the Cassie Coote-Brown Memorial Chapel of Perry J. Brown Funeral Home; 909 E. Market Street Greensboro, NC 27411.

A service honoring his life will be held Sunday, March 5, 2023 at Grace Lutheran Church; 1315 East Washington Street Greensboro, NC 27401. The service will begin at 1 pm.

The internment will take place following the service at Lakeview Memorial Park; 3600 N. O'Henry Blvd. Greensboro NC, 27405.

Jerry Miles Shoffner Sr., fondly known as Jake, was born October 29, 1942, in Greensboro, North Carolina. He departed this life on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, O'Neal and Pearline Shoffner, and his brother Neal Frank Shoffner.

He was united in holy matrimony to Helen Martin Shoffner, and to this union a son, Jerry Miles Shoffner Jr., was born.

Jerry grew up in the Goshen Community, was educated in Guilford County Schools, and graduated from James B. Dudley High School in 1961. While at Dudley, he played second base on their first baseball team. He also played multiple positions on their football team and was later inducted into Dudley High School Sports Hall of Fame. He received a scholarship offer from Tennessee State College, and briefly attended North Carolina A&T State University. He was a semi-pro player for the Teamsters Baseball Team.

He was employed for many years at Sears Distribution Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was later employed at Gilbarco from which he retired in 2011. After retiring, Jerry was the owner and operator of Jake's Lawn Care Service.

He was a dedicated and active member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he served as Elder, Trustee, member of the Chancel and Gospel Choirs, member of the Grace Lutheran Men's Club, and served in many other capacities as a good and faithful servant.

In addition to his religious and civic involvement, Jerry was active in the Masonic Orders. His membership included participation in St. John's Lodge No. 12, where he was a Past Worshipful Master, Greensboro Consistory No. 106, and Khalif Temple No. 144. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, and an Honorary Past Potentate for Khalif Temple No. 144.

Jerry, an avid sports lover, coached the Warnersville Little League football team for over 33 years and won several championships. He also coached the Khalif Temple Little League baseball team.

Living life to the fullest, he enjoyed participating in the Aggie Athletic Foundation, the Brothers Club, the Monday Morning Breakfast Club, the Christian Fellowship Club, and the Dudley Alumni Association Class of 1961. He was the founder and sponsor of the Nascar Race Brothers, and Pop Shoffner's Porch at NC A&T State University Tailgate.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Helen M. Shoffner, one son, Jerry Miles Shoffner Jr. and daughter-in-law Adlois Shoffner; two granddaughters, Jayla Kelly Shoffner and Kaylie Lynn Shoffner; brother-in-law, Harvey A. Martin and wife Gloria B. Martin; sisters-in-law, Margaret M. Lambert and Phyllis H. Martin; brother-in-law, Barry J. Lambert; nephews, Eric B. Lambert, Peter L. Lambert, Harvey A. Martin II, Tramayne J. Martin; great nephews, Mark A. Lambert and Zachary R. Lambert; aunt, Dottie Chambers; second mother, Rozenia D. Wright; and Godchildren, LeDora Kee, Sonya Warfield, and Ainsley Owens. Children that he loved as his own, Darlene Mason, Jay Jackson, Kendra Royal, Sharon Dooley, Venita Thornton, DeVaughn Jones, Andre and Kim Allen, and Jody Jackson; sister-friend, Thelma Feaster; special family friends, Denise Royal, James Scales, Peter and Louise Burnett, and Ben and Kathy Wilson, and Nancy Jimerson; special cousins Felita Donnell, Barbara D. Long, Roberta (Necey) Donnell, Ricky Chambers, Kevin Chambers, Terrance Chambers, Shelia Troxler, Nancy Jimerson and other relatives and friends; two special pets, Boots and Queen.
