He was born on March 22, 1922 in Caswell County, NC to the late Mollie Poole and Tom Poteat. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Jasper, Walter, Olean, Thomas, Mary and Ruth.James joined Beulah Baptist Church at an early age. After moving to Greensboro, he joined Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he was a member for over fifty (50) years. He served as trustee, sang in the male chorus, and Voices of Victory Choir.James was an avid farmer until he reached the big city of Greensboro. He got a job the first day he arrived at Berico Fuel Inc. where he remained for forty-six (46) years.James was married to Alease Harrelson Poteat for sixty-four (64) years and to this union six (6) children were born. Everyone who knew James, knew of his love for life and laughter. Everyone knew of his big heart, helping and always giving to all who needed help. His infectious smile will always be remembered.James Poteat was a member of the Knights of Pythians and served in the United States Army during World War II. He received the American Theater Service Medal, The Asiatic Pacific Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. All of this made James Poteat the man he was. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, left to cherish his memories are his loving and devoted wife of sixty-four (64) years, Alease Harrelson Poteat; daughters: Gloria Coleman (Eddie) and Lisa Compton, both of Greensboro, NC; Patricia Poteat of Charlotte, NC; sons: Bobby Richmond (Ann) of Mebane, NC, James Poteat, Jr. (Sheena), Thomas Poteat (Alfreda), Barry Poteat, all of Greensboro, NC; five (5) wonderful grandchildren: Nikita, Dexter, LaShaun, Kellar and Thomas, Jr.; four (4) great grandchildren:Makeala, Nasir, Malichi, Jenai; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends.
