On Monday, January 4, 2016, God's angels guided James Roosevelt Harris to his heavenly home. James was born March 4, 1933 in Boykins, VA to the late Samuel and Edith Bell Harris. He grew up in Murfreesboro, NC and was a graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, where he earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in biology. James honorably served his country in the U. S. Army and as a member of the Army Reserve. He was an active member of the Greensboro community and served on numerous civic and religious boards. James was a proud Life Member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, and a member of the Deacon Board at Providence Baptist Church.The precious memories of James will be forever cherished by his wife of 58 years, Marie Harris; two daughters, Donna (Dennis) McCoy and Lori Ann Harris, both of Greensboro, NC; two sons, Teddy (Diane) Parker of Sicklerville, NJ and Kelvin (Angela) Harris of Gastonia, NC; two sisters, three brothers, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by three siblings.The family offers its deepest gratitude to the staff at Moses Cone Hospital, Wesley Long Hospital, and Camden Place for the exceptional care provided to James during his illness.A service honoring the life of Mr. Harris will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at Providence Baptist Church, 1106 Tuscaloosa St, Greensboro, NC 27406. The visitation will begin at 10:30 am and the service will follow at 11:00 am. The interment will take place at 9:00 am on Monday, January 11, 2016 at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Boulevard, Salisbury, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made payable to NC A&T State University and designated to 'The James R. and Marie Harris Endowed Scholarship,' in the memo section. Donations should be sent to: Office of Development, NC A&T State University Dowdy Building, Suite 400, 1601 E. Market Street Greensboro, NC 27411. Perry J. Brown Funeral Home is serving the family.
