Obituary

Brother James J. Gibbs of Greensboro, NC, had a smile you could never forget. He was a kind, compassionate man who allowed his positive, pleasant demeanor reflect his religion. Family and friends may stop by Perry J. Brown Funeral Home for his visitation on Friday, August 7th, from 2 p.m to 5 p.m, at 909 E. Market St. James J. Gibbs was born March 7, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Helen Ruth Gibbs and the late James Gibbs. He was called home to be with the Lord on July 30, 2020, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro. He was a member of Wells Memorial Church of God in Christ (COGIC), where he was involved with the Mens' Ministry, assisting with security, and sharing his culinary skills during special events. Following his education in the Chicago Catholic School System, Gibbs joined the U.S. Army in 1967, during the Vietnam War era. Using his computer technology skills acquired in the Army, he was gainfully employed as an Information Technology (IT) Specialist and worked for various companies in Illinois and North Carolina throughout his career. He retired in 2008 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). On August 30, 1986, Gibbs was joined in holy matrimony with Dorothea Ethelia Pompey. From this union of love, two children were born, Justin James Gibbs, (Chicago) and Jazlyn Lanyae' Dorothea Gibbs (Charlotte). Gibbs' other children are Denkiyra N. Gibbs (Chicago) and Africus Y. Smith (Merriville, Ind). Three closely bonded stepchildren, Senyom R. T. Pompey (Greensboro), Shohn M. Pompey (Greensboro), and Jermaine R. Gibbs (Chicago). He has nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was a loving son-in-love to Katherine E. Pompey (Greensboro) and Walter L. Pompey (deceased). In addition to his wife and children, memories of Gibbs are cherished by two sisters: Kathleen Penson (Chicago) (Odell Penson (deceased), Mattie Fowler (Calvin) (Chicago, Il); two brothers, Raymond Gibbs (Pamela) (Country Club Hills, Illinois), and Anthony Quinn Gibbs (Las Vegas, NV); brother-in-love, Hayes Brown (Barbara Brown/deceased) (Chicago). He was a truly beloved uncle to a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. James, affectionately known as "the Chief," "Da Gibbski," or "Chicago" (by many in NC), was an avid, die-hard, Chicago sports fan. He had a special love for "Da Bears!" He loved everyone he met, and he was likewise, loved by everyone he met. His infectious smile and laughter will be missed, but more so, will be remembered by everyone that he became acquainted. Gibbs' canine best friend, "Thor," misses him too. He will be laid to rest at 2pm on Friday August 14, 2020, at Washington Memory Garden in Chicago, Illinois.
