Obituary

Jacquelyn Patricia Smith, daughter of the late Fred Hester and Theora Gregg Gilmer, departed this life on Friday, June 26, 2020. "Jackie," as she was affectionately called, was educated at James B. Dudley Senior High School. Thereafter, Jackie worked for Thomasville Furniture Company for 26 years, retiring in January 2000. During her retirement she worked as a sitter for the Brooks Family for two years. She was a member of Bethel AME Church from her youth until later in her adulthood, when she joined Faith Community Church. Jackie was one who embraced everyone and made them feel welcomed when they entered the house of God, demonstrated by her lifelong service as an usher and subsequent church greeter. Jackie also served in other capacities at Faith Community Church, including advisor of the Youth Usher Ministry, co-chairperson of Faith Community Church Hospitality, and member of the Greensboro Interdenominational Ushers Union. For 40 years, Jackie was a member of the Daughters of I.B.P.O. Elks of the World, Old North State Temple #142. She faithfully served as Financial Secretary for 32 of those years. For valuable services rendered to the above Temple, she received the merited honor of Life Membership. Jackie also served on various auxiliaries in the Temple, working diligently with the Youth Division. She was Loyal Daughter Ruler for Council #1 and she worked with the North Carolina Daughters of Elk Association. In the community, Jackie was a passionate volunteer at the Beloved Community Center's Homeless Hospitality House, serving the homeless population in Greensboro. Jackie's other passions included reading, word search puzzles, card games, and the San Francisco 49ers - participating as a member of the 49ers Niners Empire NC Triad Chapter. She had a constant desire to stay active and was an avid bowler, participating in various leagues. In her later years, she enjoyed Silver Sneakers workouts at the YMCA and interacting with anyone with whom she came in contact. Survivors include her children, Rev. Lorraine M. Jones (James) of Powder Springs, GA, Robin T. Smith, and Robert Kevin Smith (Maria), both of Greensboro, NC; sisters Dolores G. Clapp, Eileen G. Blackwell, and one brother, Roderick E. Gilmer, all of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren Erica Parker (Albert "Bo") of Whitsett, NC, Natalia Lennon (Rick) of Powder Springs, GA, Brandon Smith (Shauna) of Carrboro, NC, Erica Fuller of Greensboro, Brandie Smith of Memphis, TN, Brittany Smith of Durham, NC, Alexis Jones of Powder Springs, GA; special niece Tammy Worthy of Greensboro, NC; special confidantes Rev. Lucretia Middleton and Rev. Alma Purvis, and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her mother, Theora G. Gilmer, sisters Terry Speed and Rosalind G. Dixon, and brother, William "Bee Bee" Gilmer.
