Irving Edward Hemingway was born on November 9, 1950 to Clarence and Gladys Hemingway. He grew up in St. Albans and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. He was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church attending Sunday School and participating in youth fellowship programs. He was also a Boy Scout.
He began his career by working for the New York Telephone Company and then trained five years to become an electrician with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW) Local 3. When jobs were scarce, he went west to Washington state and then settled in California and became active with Local 617 Electrician Union. He remained in California for more than twenty years then he returned to New York to help take care of his mother. He is predeceased by his father and mother who passed respectively in 2005 and 2016. Before he passed, he was an active member of St. Albans Congregational Church where he helped coordinate monthly food drives. He also coordinated the weekly food pantry at Hollis Avenue Congregational Church.
