Ira Benjamin Shoffner, Jr. was born March 29, 1936 to the late Ira Benjamin Shoffner, Sr. and Leila Hairston Shoffner. â??Bingoâ??, as he was affectionately called by family and lifelong friends, was a warm-hearted person; a wonderful cook; a hard worker and a compassionate, jolly individual who loved the Lord.In his youth, Ira was a member of the Boy Scouts of America at St. Matthews UMC. He attended schools in Greensboro, from Jacksonville elementary (now known as David D. Jones Elementary), to J.C. Price and Dudley High.Being a self-starter, Ira was never without employment, from his teen years through retirement and beyond, he was no stranger to hard work. He was gainfully employed at one time or another at Bonitz Insulation, Dillard Paper Company, Monroe Construction Group & Mother Murphy Laboratories, Inc. Once retired, he and his late wife, Ethel operated a sandwich shop where they served up delicious take out foods. His last job was a part-time taxi driver, which he held until his health failed.Ira was somewhat of a family historian, who told vivid stories of our family and other relatives.He leaves to cherish fond memories sons: Connie McPhaul of Las Vegas, NV; Sanders Nesmith of Sedalia, NC and David L. Nesmith (Lucy); daughter: Mary L. Donaldson (Robert); granddaughter: Shonda Brown and great granddaughter: Zakiya (also called Ziggy) Brown of Greensboro, NC; sisters: Shirley Shoffner Mitchell of Fresno, CA, and E. Raye Shoffner Dawkins (Reverend Homer C. Dawkins) of Greensboro, NC; nephews: Sean Dawkins (Roslyn); sons, Jordan & Ryan Dawkins of Harrisburg, NC, Staff Sergeant Kyle Dawkins (Staff Sergeant Melanie Dawkins); children: Nathaniel, Natalia and Xavier Dawkins of Aviana, Italy.
