Obituary

Rev. Dr. Howard Allen Chubbs was an eloquent pastor, preacher, scholar, singer and spiritual father for 49 years at Providence Baptist Church of Greensboro.  This servant leader's daily life was a sermon as he spoke truth, justice and peace in the community he served and supported.  He heard a still, soft voice on Thursday, March 12th, and took his heavenly journey home to be with the Lord. Howard Allen Chubbs' life was divinely ordered from day one.  He was born Feb. 16, 1936, to Elijah and Annie Laura Chubbs in Chattanooga, TN.  Called by God to preach, teach, counsel and comfort, he was licensed to the ministry at the age of ten by the West Side Baptist Church of Chattanooga, and ordained at 22 years of age by the Greater Bethesda Baptist Church of Chicago.  He served as assistant minister at several churches and the shepherd of two great churches:  Mosby Memorial Baptist Church of Richmond, from 1959 to 1966; and since 1966, Providence Baptist Church of Greensboro.  Like Nehemiah, Chubbs led the Providence flock in major building campaigns. Upon arriving to Providence, the congregation was worshipping at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University's Harrison Auditorium.  He led the rebuilding of the 100-year-old, historic Providence.  Twenty years later, he led the one-million-dollar expansion of the edifice.  Following another 20 years, he led the four-million-dollar expansion of Providence, which parishioners named the Howard Allen Chubbs Family Enrichment Center.Chubbs was directed by God to prepare himself for a life of service in the vineyard and received an undergraduate degree in sociology from Tennessee State University;  a master of divinity degree from Virginia Union University's School of Theology;  a church management certification from the Babcock School of Management at Wake Forest University; and  a doctor of ministry degree plus post doctoral studies from Drew University.  He also received a doctor of divinity degree from Virginia Union University;  and a doctor of humane letters from Florida Memorial College and Shaw University. His ministerial career coincided with his other vocational pursuits as a social case worker for Cook County Dept. of Welfare in Chicago; a teacher in Virginia Public Schools; an adjunct professor at Virginia Union University, Howard University, Duke University, and Greensboro College; and guest lecturer for numerous colleges and universities across the state. Chubbs was involved in a diversity of community/civic organizations:  Greensboro Human Relations Commission; past president of Greensboro Ministers Fellowship and Greensboro Pulpit Forum; past vice president of the Dept. of Higher Education for General Baptist State Convention of NC; and board member of Children's Home Society, Greensboro United Way, National Conference For Community & Justice, and Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.  He was previously chairman of the Board of Trustees of NC A&T State University; chairman of Bryan Park Complex Commission; board of directors for Greensboro Chamber of Commerce.  He served as: a board member of Center for Creative Leadership, Greensboro Redevelopment Commission, United Service for Older Adults, Hospice & Palliative Care of Greensboro, Wells Springs Retirement Community; and Board of Visitors for Greensboro College.  He was a member and Sire Archon of Beta Epsilon Boule of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity, Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society, and 100 Black Men of America.  He received numerous awards, of which a few included:  Who's Who Among American Preachers, NC Order of the Long Leaf Pine, American Diabetes Association's Father of the Year, NC A&T's Human Rights Award, and International Civil Rights Center & Museum's Unsung Hero. He leaves to mourn and celebrate his life and legacy, wife, the former Louise Miles of Greensboro; son, Howard Douglas Chubbs (Deloria Pride) of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Hazel Smith and Stephanie-Jill Baker (Aaron) of Chicago, IL, Mae Nann Brown of Las Vegas, NV; brother-in-law, Everett Miles, Jr. (Anita) of Hilton Head, SC; a host of nieces and nephews; the Providence Baptist Church Family; and the Greensboro/Guilford County community.
