Henry James Dawson was born on April 7, 1952 to the late Eddie C. Hunter and the late Allie Mae Dawson in Attapulgus, Georgia. He departed this life on December 10, 2021 at Moses Cone hospital.
He graduated from Attapulgus A&M High School in 1972 where he played basketball for four years. He was an all-American player and he held the highest scoring record. Henry accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of the 2nd Morning Star Baptist Church in Attapulgus, Georgia.
Henry was drafted in the US Army in 1972 as a Medic. While in the service he earned the expert medical badge and his highest rank was E6. After serving his country, he attended North Carolina A&T State University. A few years later in 1974 he gained employment at Cone Mill denim factory where he was employed until its closing in 2018. He was currently employed at The Vomela Company until his death. He was an avid bowler from Las Vegas to New York.
He was preceded death by his parents; his wife, Phyllis Dawson; three brothers, William Phillip Mosley (Anna Lou Mosely), Fulton Bailey (Vera) and John Arthur Dawson, Sr.; and two nephews, William Phillip Mosley, Jr., and Timothy Green.
He leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Annie Dawson of Bainbridge, Georgia and Rosa Gurley of Tampa, Florida; one brother, Jimmy Melvin Dawson (Maria) of Winter Park, Florida; stepdaughter, Pamela Brown of Greensboro, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Brenda Brown of Greensboro, North Carolina; half sibling, Charlene Hunter Renesca (husband Jean) of Kissimmee, Florida; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; best friends, Dewey Clayton and Vernice Thomas both of Greensboro, North Carolina. They served together as medics in the army and lived together for a short time after and remained friends until his death;
Henry will forever be in the hearts of his beloved family.
A service honoring his life will be on Monday December 20,2021 at St. Phillip AME Zion Church. Visitation will begin at 2:30 pm and the funeral will follow at 3:00 pm.
Burial will be at Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury NC
