Obituary

Harry Lorenzo Lucas, Sr. was born on December 21, 1949 to the late Allen Lucas and Essie Bell Bartley in Clyo, Georgia. He went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, September 11, 2015. As a child, Harry, Sr. attended Oak Grove Baptist Church and the Effingham County schools. At the age of 15, he moved to New Jersey to live with his father and worked as a professional architectural landscaper with Capital Landscaping in New Jersey for over 30 years. After retiring, Harry, Sr. relocated to Greensboro to be near his son, Harry, Jr. He joined Saint Paul Baptist Church shortly thereafter and served as the church landscaper until his health declined. Coming from a large family, Harry, Sr. loved to cook and take care of others. In 2008 he married Pearline Garner and inherited a large extended family that put his cooking skills to the test, often requesting his macaroni and cheese, cabbage and potatoes and baked chicken with the "special secret sauce." Landscaping was his passion and living "up north" developed his other passions: cooking and the New York Giants. When it wasn't football season, he enjoyed sitting in his chair watching the Cooking Channel, Moonshiners, Swamp People and The Haves and the Have Nots. He especially liked watching Family Feud and talking back to the television saying "that ain't up there." To cherish the memories of his wonderful meals, his smile, sense of humor, infectious laugh and stories of his childhood are devoted wife and caretaker, Pearline; his namesake, pride and joy, and fellow New York Giants fan- Harry, Jr., as well as LaMark, Lisa and Leonard(Linda)Garner; His Parents, Mr. Lucius and Mrs. Essie B. Lawton of Rincon, Georgia; Mother-in-law Mrs. Robbie Miller Brothers, Thaddeus McNeil, Gary McNeil (Barbara), Jerome Roberson (Debra), Alvin Lucas (Shela) Nathaniel Lucas (Shannon), Willie Lucas, Leroy Lucas (Wanda Faye) and Rodney Lucas (Tammie); his sisters, Francine and Gracie Roberson; Sisters-in-law: Janell, Yvonne, Denise and Sheila Miller and Brothers-in-law: James Miller (Beatrice), Greg and Gary Miller of Greensboro, North Carolina. He was a loving grandfather to Aaron, Zion, Jessica, Jasmine, Jonathan, Daquan and Dion; And a playful "paw paw" to Harmony and Isaac. He is also survived by his best buddies, Pastor James W. Fisher and Charles Stevens. They enjoyed talking with about his faith, his family, food and football. In addition, he is survived by and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the Cone Cancer Center, staff of Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and Wesley Long Memorial Hospital, as well as, to the staff of Hospice of Greensboro. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that a contribution be made to Hospice of Greensboro or the American Cancer Society. We take comfort in knowing that to be absent in the body is to be present with the Lord. A service honoring the life of Harry will take place at Saint Paul Baptist Church, 1309 Larkin Street, Greensboro, North Carolina, 27406 on Saturday September 19, 2015. The visitation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and the service will follow at 12:00 p.m. The interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park, 3600 N O'Henry Boulevard, Greensboro, North Carolina 27405.
