Gwendolyn Harris White embarked upon her heavenly journey on Thursday morning , November 19, 2015. She and her twin sister were born to Clyde and Roberta Harris on March 21, 1936 in Greensboro, N.C. Gwen's life was filled with many experiences. Her schooling began at St. Mary's Catholic School, continuing on to St. Francis Academy in Baltimore, then to Dudley Senior High. She is a graduate of Bennett College with further studies in San Jose, California. In 1959, she married Major John H. White of Greensboro. To this union were born two children, Marquita and Brian. Her husband's association with the United States Air Force included traveling to many different states and countries—among which were Texas, Turkey, Mississippi , New York, Alabama, Germany, Florida and California. Their retirement brought them back to Greensboro. Gwen began her teaching career in Newport News, VA continuing at Lincoln Middle School then Dudley Senior High School from which she retired. Her civic affiliations were numerous. She was a Life-time member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its many organizations, especially as a Lector and Euchuristic Minister, Other memberships included professional groups; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Greensboro Chapter of Links, Inc., Jack and Jill of America. She was a great lover of her social club—The Pacers—her traveling partners. Gwen's charitable callings provided assistance to numerous agencies assisting those in need. This special lady leaves to treasure memory of her loved ones: her husband of 56 years, John White, a daughter Marquita and her husband Clarence Hunter, her son Brian White and his partner Shawn Robinette; two grandchildren, Loren and Kaylen Hunter; brother Dr. John Harris, three sisters, Dorothy Williams, Joyce Harris, and Barbara Harris, four brothers-in-law, Weldon and Gurney White, Jerry Watkins, and Marvin Starks and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The following immediate family members who predeceased Gwen were her parents and sisters, Mae Starks, Elizabeth Watkins and Lenora Toney. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on November 25, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. Greensboro Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. ceremony at 10:00 A.M. Ceremony of Greensboro Chapter of Links Inc. to follow. Visitation 10:30-11:00 A.M. Burial will take place at Lakeview Memorial Park. Family lunch after burial.
