Gwendolyn Holt Cherry was born on January 17, 1933, in Greensboro, to the late Elmer D. Holt, Sr. and Mae Galloway Holt. Gwendolyn gained her wings to her heavenly home Friday, April 26, 2019. She was educated in Greensboro City Schools, and obtained her bachelor degree from the illustrious North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCA&TSU). She later went on to obtain her master degree as well. Gwendolyn was crowned "Miss A&T College" in the late forties during her college career. Gwendolyn was a lifetime member of Metropolitan United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Debonair Sorority of AKA's where her work and dedication were prominent. Gwendolyn was an assistant professor of mathematics for NCA&TSU for 38 years before she retired in 1995. She rendered loyal, invaluable, and untiring service in her years as a professor. She served the university and department with distinction in many capacities, as a member of multiple committees. A thorough and skillful teacher, a motivator for learning, a true professional, and a tireless worker is how some would describe, Gwendolyn. Along with her passion for teaching she also took on the motherly role to her younger siblings after the passing of their mother, where she raised them in Greensboro until their adulthood; and was always a place of comfort if ever needed. Her sense of humor was unmatched—there was never a dull moment with a smile like Ms. Cherry's. She often hosted social events and gatherings amongst her friends and was the life of the occasion. She was very active in her community, even being "Ms. Gate City in 1968". In her later years, Gwen was diligently cared for by Sheila Webb and Millia Edwards. These were essentially her best friends in her last years as they spent every day with Ms. Cherry. Gwendolyn was preceded in death by husband: Carl Cherry, and siblings: Portia, Perry, Sue and Anthony. She is survived by siblings: Mary Lynn, Elmer Jr., Waymon, Larry and Richard (Cassandra) all of Greensboro; sister-in-law: Christine Holt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and sorority sisters. A service celebrating her life will be held on Friday May 3, 2019 at Metropolitan United Methodist Church, 1701 E. Market Street in Greensboro, North Carolina. The visitation is at 12noon and the service will follow at 1pm. Interment to follow service at Westminster Gardens Cemetery, 3601 Whitehurst Road in Greensboro, North Carolina.
